Figure I may as well spread the word on this as if there wasn't enough shit to worry about: They're trying to pass SOPA again under the guise of the BlockBEARD bill and some other bills.

i hate the clippy "protest" shit. i had to do research on what it meant and it just felt like a youtuber being performative, the lukewarm political message behind it being secondary

Ripley's Believe it or Else 🎃 @ripleylacross.bsky.social · 15/07/2025

It's Summer in the Northern Hemisphere again, and PDX will be hitting 100F sometime this week. So here's a comic I did back in 2020 about keeping your home cool! It could use some updating, especially with some tricks I learned during the 2021 Heat Dome, but it's still a decent guide. #comic

COMIC, panel 1.

TEXT: How to keep your home COOL in the summer!

Ripley is drawn wearing a short dress and bandana around their neck, sweating like crazy as they wave to the reader with a smile despite their discomfort.

(c) 2020. Ripley LaCross

Comic, panel 2.

TEXT: IN THE MORNING, or as soon as sun hits a window, CLOSE IT AND BLOCK IT. Trap ALL of the cool over-night air in your home!

Blinds aren't enough! Use fabric too!

Illustration: Ripley pulling drapes shut over mini-blinds.

2025 update: If the window is south or west facing, I recommend additional material between the glass and blinds as well. Sheets of styrofoam, cardboard with a foil lining (facing out), bubble wrap, etc etc. Do your best to keep the space between your curtains and glass from becoming a hot plate.

If you are able, outdoor blinds work WORLDS better than indoor blinds. Awnings, too!

(c) 2020. Ripley LaCross

Comic, panel 3.

TEXT: MAINTAIN AIRFLOW!
Blow cool air INTO warm rooms.
Only blow warm air out if the room has two doors and you can also blow cool in*.

Illustration of Ripley at their (old) standing desk setup. A note reads "Hot office" while a box fan blows into the space with "Cool hallway" noted above it.

*This is just the nature of thermodynamics. If a room is warm, and all of the objects within the room are the same temperature, removing that air will do nothing to cool the space down. Colder air must be moved in to reduce the ambient temperature and, eventually, the surface temp of everything in there.

(c) 2020. Ripley LaCross

Comic, panel 4.

TEXT: SUN'S DOWN, CURTAINS DOWN!

When the sun sets and temps outside drop below inside, open all the windows and blow that cool air IN!

Illustration: A box fan in a window blowing cool air inside.
