the easiest way to get to this document is through my website, so I just download it every time. this is interesting. should my local file storage be more like a website? or is there a way of accessing this thing on the web that feels less like "downloading"?

San Francisco's a pretty crazy place.
Twin Peaks behind Eureka Valley, but it's all hallucinogenically distorted in the way I seem to like distorting things these days

pleased to report that I've made a version of Google Earth that kinda makes you feel like you have to puke
3D modeled view of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco and adjoining Marina District, with the landscape rolled upwards in a way made famous by the film Inception, but hey it's not like they get to own that effect, it's a cool effect

design venting: Spotify made the top result of a search (1) look different than all the other results, (2) have a faded-out background so it looks especially irrelevant / skippable, (3) have its play button on the right side instead of the left, just to make sure your muscle memory is defeated.

idk why he had to stand waist-deep in an especially constructed manhole but I can relate
"Standing waist-deep in an especially constructed manhole, an engineer recently went through strange antics to obtain valuable sound data for acoustics research. Facing each point of the compass in turn, he moved a dial until a tone signal heard in one ear, through a telephone receiver, matched the apparent loudness of a distant loudspeaker heard with the other ear. The tests showed the response of the ear to sounds from various angles."

Found in "Thinking Physics". Was Epstein very wrong or very silly? (FWIW, there IS an etymological connection here! "Calculus" comes from "calx", Latin for limestone. Then you use that to describe counting with stones, and weird rocky build-ups in the body.)
"The technique you used here for finding the distance traveled is the technique of Integral Calculus. Integral means to integrate or sum many small parts. Calculus refers to many very small parts or layers which build up to make the sum. The name comes from minerals which build up in layers such as the calculus which builds up on your teeth. As the dentist scrapes it it flakes off. Each flake is a layer."

Figure 7 from Hutchins, Hollan, & Norman (1985)

"Distances from User Goals" can be "Small" or "Large". "Engagement" can be "Interface as conversation" or "Interface as model world". Direct manipulation is close to user goals and has model-world-style engagement.

unremittingly obsessed with Luca Tóth's "Vegan Mayo" after seeing it last weekend at @seasluganimation.bsky.social. it's a real novelty for me to have something stuck in my head and no way to relive it on demand! watching weird short films at festivals gives a rare taste of media scarcity. love it.

This result doesn't look right. We're convolving the sum of two Gaussians (f₁ + f₂) by a Gaussian kernel (k), so we should get out a sum of two Gaussians (f₁ ∗ k + f₂ ∗ k). This is maybe the sum of three Gaussians? Too many inflection points to be the sum of two.

made a width-responsive pretty-printer with Prettier's "Doc" system. not sure I've seen this done before? it's nice! also I made "type" keys show up as sexpr-style heads, and "id" keys show up as a little hashtags. adapting notation to your own practices for ergonomics and concision is dope!

I don't yet have anything insightful to say about distorted tourist maps of cities but I'm very excited by them.
tourist map of San Francisco; the area west of Divisadero St is horizontally contracted by a factor of roughly 4, so it takes up 1/3 of the width of SF rather than 2/3. it looks gnarly and cool.tourist map of Seattle; focus is on downtown region which is depicted roughly accurately, but things get wacky north of that, with vertical and horizontal contractions made to get Volunteer Park and UW into the frame. it looks wacky and intriguing.

IIUC, uv is a fast, sane replacement for the pip tooling, which is great! if you want an analogous fast, sane replacement for the conda tooling (which includes a broader range of stuff beyond pure Python), you might consider pixi: prefix.dev. looks like NumPy recommends exactly these two options!
from https://numpy.org/install/, recommending uv and pixi as "project based" approaches for "new users who want a streamlined workflow"

maybe this calls for an OS-level "tray" you can drag things into and out of? (this too has a real-world equivalent: note the cute "coffee cup shelf" next to the door of All City Coffee in this unattractive photo I found online.)

Just learned tennis scoring; thanks @pte.bsky.social. I thought the terminology was overcomplicated, until I saw that it turns an infinite state-space of scores into a finite one. Q1. Is this bisimulation? Q2. Generalize: Which winning-score sets A, B ⊆ ℕ² can be tracked with a finite # of states?

Do you see how the arrows connecting labels to their referents have extra "switchbacks"? I like this a lot. Does anyone know what it's called or where it comes from?

concrete example of my confusion: I want to parse and then transform some markdown, and then save the AST. seems like I need to do this in two separate "processors"? cuz there are methods to do 1/3 or 3/3 "phases" but not 2/3? what? why are we not just calling functions here
