Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 07/10/2026I lived in LA for a long time. Got to know a lots of Hollywood industry types and how it works. Our industry is growing into something like it—so few gigs, high competition, and everything’s temporary. Plus a ladder that gets pulled up so newcomers don’t advance as easily. Don’t love that. 010
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 06/10/2026Made a few updates to the site, including a nicer reading experience. And put up some projects I’ve been working on. I plan to do more writing about design, craft, and keep digging on helping people have better conversations, too. Also: lots more to come, especially with art. joshuagraves.mejoshuagraves.meJoshua Graves | Designer, Author, Curious PersonMultidisciplinary product designer, author of We Need to Talk, and visual artist. 020

Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 04/10/2026Oh dang, Midnight Mass was good for me. Thought it did well with religious/family trauma themes. The use of a vampire as a metaphor for losing one’s autonomy in settings like that was effective. That said, Bly Manor wasn‘t my thing but House of Usher was huge fun. Wake Up was forgettable IMO. 000

Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 04/10/2026This reminds me off the Monet story of how he had cataract surgery, recovered, and could see IR. Harrowing circumstances, yet quite an outcome. www.sciencehistory.org/stories/maga...sciencehistory.orgCould Claude Monet See Like a Bee?A harrowing eye surgery may have given the impressionist painter the ability to see UV light. 010
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 03/10/2026 I miss old Twitter. I deleted my account and won’t go back. But damn this is good brain rot 010
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 02/10/2026Look, it’s going to be awkward. For everyone. You’re going to feel like you just got seared on a grill. That’s ok. Let it be that way. And we need to get to work on making this place safer by looking after each other. Everyone else has been doing this work for years. We haven’t. It’s time to start. 000
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 02/10/2026This doesn’t take a lot of work, or a big speech. Just a few lines like these: - bro wtf that’s not ok - that’s not funny - knock it off dude - i don’t get the joke, why’s that funny? 110
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 02/10/2026Yes, your brother may just stop doing that around you. But it’s one less place he can get away with it, and that’s a win. It may hurt you, you may lose a friend, or other harm may come to you. That’s the price of being a good man. 100
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 02/10/2026If you want to prevent big, bad things, you must do the menial, unpleasant job of telling your brother his behavior isn’t ok. Because the more we practice that behavior, the more of us who do this, the less places it will occur. 100
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 02/10/2026Instead, we excuse him because we know him, because he’s a good dude. Or because it’ll cost us something. Or worse, because we’re sad and desperate men who wish it were us. 100
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 02/10/2026We aren’t calling out our brother when he makes an out of pocket comment. We aren’t stopping him when he puts his hands on someone at a bar or concert. We aren’t making him look at the impact his words have. 100
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 02/10/2026And why? A bunch of small, annoying work that needs doing isn’t getting done. That’s precisely what prevents the big bad things. 100
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 02/10/2026How do I know we’re failing? It’s still happening. What’s this “it?” Look around. Pick something. This week it’s Cornell where a woman alleges seven men raped her and dozens more knew and did nothing to stop it. Next week, it’ll be somewhere else. And it's been happening endlessly. 100
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 02/10/2026Men, we’re blowing it. And we need to face it. We’re saying all the right things: I’m ashamed of men, I’d never let that happen, I’d have said something. Maybe you would've, but those statements come after the fact. There’s significant work that comes before that we aren’t doing It's failing us all. 100

Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 28/09/2026I have noticed similar over the last 3 or so years where people are so far in their takes they can’t hear any nuance anymore. I can only guess at the correlations, but there are a few big ones. 020

Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 26/09/2026The wildest things happen in interviews, and maybe the weirdest is when an interviewee told me how stupid my questions were, and then proceeded to try and run the interview. He was certain he nailed it and asked about when we’d tell him next steps. 110
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 26/09/2026Those are better signals than anything o on Glassdoor imo. 000
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 26/09/2026- The were late because they were playing guitar - They had no substantive answers to any questions, just bluster - They didn’t prepare a portfolio and just asked if I had any questions - They presented a project for a big tech company, as though they’d worked for them but it was a student project 020
Joshua Graves @joshuagraves.me · 26/09/2026I’ve never disqualified candidates for something as arbitrary as having an iced coffee in an interview. But here are other reasons why I did pass on designers: - They told me my interview questions were stupid and told me what I should ask instead - That kept talking down to another interviewer 100
