Importantly for this comparison with AI ads, the Head On roller thingy was a fake product that didn’t work as advertised and got pulled after complaints to the Better Business Bureau. The best ad in the world can’t overcome a fundamentally flawed product.

I have spoken with people who enjoy the Wallet Inspector’s podcast, but they don’t seem to know why they like it so much. They just sort of feel better afterward but if you ask them to recall specific moments it’s hard for them. This is true of a lot of famous podcasts, lots of vibes over substance.

I agree with the broad point you’re making (the friction of reflecting on a new contact and choosing how to contact them is REALLY important for our own sense of place and self), but i think networking and making friends are very different dynamics.

“Thanks, I got it at Versayce” was a vocal stim for like 11 years.

It’s also one of the few spy shows I can watch without rolling my eyes, even if Ho has basically magic computer powers and I think there would be deeper questions in the UK government if, like, five first desks in a row were all that corrupt. But yeah, I do love the show quite a bit.

I am so bad at LinkedIn and I try to tell people that I’m not claiming some charming eccentricity, I just don’t like how it feels or the kind of communication it fosters and it’s just a flaw and I’m sorry, and I still get “I messaged you on LinkedIn“ emails? Why not just email me in the first place?

I feel extremely lucky to have wound up in a place in my 40s where I genuinely like my colleagues and they have been friendly and welcoming, and I would still recoil if I saw one of them recording me with these stalker specs. The whole category is just gross and intrusive.
