When I asked Georgia Tech play-by-play man @andydemetra.bsky.social to help me re-create the hideout play my grandfather saw at an LSU-Georgia Tech football game in 1944, I didn't realize that he played a crucial role in sports hideout history. Andy is the man who coined "Grand Theft Alvarado"!

I have been contributing to Slate for almost six years, and that is not even 1/5 of the publication's lifespan. Appreciate @joshuablevin.bsky.social for sharing this note on a 2021 story. Never wrong just early slate.com/culture/2021...
This story was recommended by longtime Slatester Josh Levin as part of our 30th anniversary celebration at Slate: Back in 2021, when I was editing Slate’s sports coverage, I assigned Alex Kirshner a piece on Caitlin Clark, then a freshman at the University of Iowa. Alex’s story, headlined “The Most Exciting Player in College Basketball,” was a fantastic introduction to an athlete who’s since become one of the most talked-about people in American culture … and absolutely no one read it. We were maybe a little early, but all of you were definitely late!

Incredible @defector.com piece on trick plays in football. I read this part and gasped. defector.com/how-one-tric...
In the fourth quarter on that cold and rainy night at Tiger Stadium, with the game extremely close, a Georgia Tech player went down injured. Papa said some trainers came out on the field, and carried that player off on a stretcher. “Meanwhile, the whole Georgia Tech team was lined up against the sidelines,” he said. “When they got almost to the sideline, they put the stretcher down, and they rolled him off the stretcher, and he was still on the field.”

Papa says all of this happened in a flash: the sideline, the stretcher, the player rolling off the gurney and onto the field. When the ball was snapped, the guy who’d supposedly been hurt didn’t stay on the ground. Instead, he booked it for the end zone.

“He got up, caught a pass, went over the goal line, and beat LSU,” Papa said.

My grandfather saw this trick play more than 80 years ago, and it lodged in his brain forever. “It was so different from anything I’ve ever seen before,” he said. “To see something like that, how can you forget it?”
