Great set of music/other recommendations from Josh in this edition of NE, always worth a look. The new Greg Freeman album really is that good, and then some. Feel lucky to have caught Greg in London a couple of months back, it was a super fun and memorable show. Man what a songwriter and performer.

I will only recommend things on No Expectations if I'm genuinely excited about them. This week, it's even more true. All heaters. www.noexpectations.fyi/p/greg-freem...

No Expectations 163: Born Again

Stellar new albums from Greg Freeman, Andy Boay, and more. Plus, Steven Hyden’s new book on the Strokes and a roadtrip drama set in 1999 Mexico City.

For my weekenders: I profiled Ken “Goldfinger” Connell, an acid courier, hash smuggler, escape artist, folk hero in the Dead’s orbit—and a catastrophe to his own family. Decades later, his son and niece went looking for who he truly was. Read on @playboy.com: www.playboy.com/read/celebri...

The Rise and Fall of Goldfinger, the One-Handed Acid Outlaw

Kenneth Connell moved through the Grateful Dead’s world like a character out of one of their songs. His relative are just now piecing together the life he kept hidden.

at a dive bar. went to the bathroom but it was occupied so i waited outside. a guy comes out and says “thank you” and i say “of course.” it was only until i got inside the restroom where i thought, “what the hell was that dude thanking me for”

I'm not too stressed about the super split and polarized reviews about Iñárritu's 'Digger.' I'm a sicko who actually really liked 'Bardo,' so nothing you guys can say will scare me off

Ran into a childhood friend who lives in Chicago over the weekend. We'd run into each other before, and she works in music. I'm pretty sure she meant to ask, "Are you still in journalism?" but what she said was "are you still journaling?"

I was interning for the A.V. Club when this published and when I'd brag that I worked with "Mr. Autumn Man" (@erikadams.bsky.social) people would go "holy shit that's awesome" way more than they would when I said I interned for the A.V. Club

a few months ago, a piece that surveyed novelists about how they read. there was one writer on my “to check out” list who said he read ~300 books last year (wow!) and then said he did it all via audiobooks at 2x speed. so, uh, i realized my queue of books was too long and took his novel out

made it to riot fest at noon to see kiwi jr only to realize the band got stuck in minnesota because of the storms. only music i saw was the next band yard act soundchecking. might be a record: a 40 minute no music festival.
