It makes me think of Hadestown, the musical - we're rooting so hard for Orpheus and Eurydice and we KNOW how the story goes, but we're hoping against hope just the same and getting let down is sad, but beautiful. I'm looking forward to watching RE again knowing that ending is coming.

Oh, I agree it was sad and I liked him a lot, too, but that gave me a nice combo of poignancy and grim laughing at the cruel whims of fate. Like, I have a friend who is dying of thyroid cancer and he's encouraging any and all bits/jokes/etc because what can you do but laugh when fate shits on you?

I don’t love a bummer ending usually but liked this one. We root for him the whole way through but it just doesn’t work out for him, because sometimes you just don’t win. I dunno, felt more gallows humor than nihilism- in keeping with the tone of the movie.

I don't see much of a Pratchett parallel, as a guy who's read a ton of Discworld. These books aren't quite as clever or heartful as Pratchett, but they're definitely fun. I agree it depends on your tolerance for lengthy descriptions of lootboxes and in-game effects and stuff.

Shit gets weird over a single night, especially if it involves aliens or other general weirdness. Characters get swept along mostly witnessing surreal events unfold, everyone's mostly unscathed at the end.
