And the costs are, for the most part, immaterial to most policy makers, since the value of road building is uncritically accepted as fact, and its construction seen as a leading indicator of a "healthy" economy

He would have been better off saying absolutely nothing publicly, rather than give a self-aggrandizing interview that was rife with logical inconsistencies, gaslighting, and more than a little bit of self-pity

Tend to think it would be better for society if SCOTUS justices didn't shamelessly gaslight. Particularly if they're going to use these PR interviews as a chance to publicly revel in their own courage Courage to take away rights, but apparently not to admit what everyone, everywhere can see

Focusing on street-level quality of life is important on its own, and not just as a shield against right-wing cynicism. Those are the issues that people feel day in, day out. And while the left rightly pushes for big reforms (which take years), we must also help people in meaningful ways today

Really nice piece. There's a lot we can learn from downtown Silver Spring about what makes - and helps to sustain - a vibrant, diverse, and highly social urban community. And despite some bumps & disruptions in recent years, the future here is so, so bright

This, and...from what I can tell, MAHA is unbothered by the fact that their lifestyle / supplement recs are often incredibly expensive. Or at least, require a ton of (ongoing) resources Which makes it feel an awful lot like a status movement

Look forward to seeing SHA's full report on the bus lane performance. I think it's possible that if there was more existing bus service on 355, SHA may have reached a different conclusion
110
Josh Linden @joshlinden.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Unfortunate, but not surprising. SHA said that the data didn't support continuing the lanes. But notably, in its letter to SHA, MCDOT said: "The data collected this summer demonstrates that roadway capacity in this area could be reallocated to transit without substantially affecting traffic flow"

An incredible example of how institutionalized car culture is The parking lot, and the car they drove, are somehow naturally occurring and completely unseen as choices that engineered away physical activity Instead, it's the electric mobility devices that are threats to our way of life

Fortunately there's been a bit of positive movement at the other intersection discussed in the article. But that one - which required a complicated resident-led process for a speed hump - also demonstrates why moving the needle on street safety is so hard

As we begin the 2026-2027 school year, it's frustrating to revisit this story from the 25-26 school year, which talks about a driver hitting a child during the 24-25 school year After two years, this intersection is exactly the same. Our neighborhoods deserve much better than this kind of neglect

Setting aside the infrastructure deficiencies and the fact that the 35mph limit on Watkins Mill is way too fast for a school and pedestrian area... It's beyond time for a legislative change for more severe driver penalties when they hit peds and cyclists

Helping more people live near high quality transit + daily needs, in a walkable neighborhood, is climate action, full stop Denying people that opportunity is not climate action, nor is it climate resilience. It simply entrenches the land use patterns (and exclusion) that contributed to the crisis

You also feel it when the folks entrusted to manage our streets reject a traffic control request because "cars may ignore it" As though the status quo is better than a marginal non-compliance rate

You feel this in abstract ways, but also in very specific ways Like when a DOT insists on a lengthy and convoluted process for basic safety treatments (speed humps, stop signs, flashing ped lights) As though we need to study them for the millionth time or outsource safety decisions to a referendum

The county has plans for BRT on Colesville, which would redesign this intersection to make it signalized (good!). It would also widen some sidewalks along Colesville, among other things But that project is years away. This is a state-owned highway, and @mdsha.bsky.social needs to make it safer ASAP
