Depressed by our politics, I spent the summer reading Anthony Trollope's Palliser novels about 19thC Westminster It was glorious escapism, but the quality of the writing also threw up some intriguing parallels Wrote on it for @newstatesman1913.bsky.social www.newstatesman.com/culture/book...

The Prime Minister, a classic of Victorian political fiction, is 150 years old. But what can it teach us about governing today?

There's a strange moment when vast tragedy becomes personal. Watching the Nepal flooding, I suddenly saw my old friend Biru's village, in the most gorgeous valley I've ever known. What must it have been like for him, his whole world washed away in seconds? www.thetimes.com/world/asia/a...

I have emailed you and will happily conduct a serious and reasoned discussion there. You publicly wading in to support the argument of an anon account playing around with antisemitic tropes isn't really going to get us anywhere.

Josh Glancy @joshglancy.bsky.social · 29/03/2026
You're really going to row in behind this? You really think that threatening to deport Jews for having dual loyalties is the same as suggesting an extension to settlement paths for recent visa holders? I'm genuinely very surprised.

Josh Glancy @joshglancy.bsky.social · 29/03/2026
Sorry yes you're right, deporting British Jews on the basis of dual loyalty allegations is totally the same as extending settlement paths to citizenship for recent visa holders. I concede.

It's odd to throw around such overheated accusations while also claiming to be the serious rational evidence-based guy. Hopefully we'll meet in person at some point and discuss this sensibly, as your approach here is pretty unreasonable.

Josh Glancy @joshglancy.bsky.social · 29/03/2026
I think these are tough and complex decisions with clear downsides too. It's frustrating that, mainly due to badly designed Tory policy, we've ended up having this debate and potentially applying these retrospective changes, which will be harsh.

Who on earth is suggesting they don't have a right to respond? If you read the piece, it quotes several Labour MPs who are angry about the reforms and suggests they may well be diluted as a result.

Two things can be true at once, not that hard. And no it wasn't "dictated by a Home Office spad". People are capable of developing their own opinions, there's no need to make patronising ad hominem remarks to undermine my integrity (something you've also done several times before).

Josh Glancy @joshglancy.bsky.social · 29/03/2026
You deliberately misconstrue the point as ever. It's perfectly possible to argue that 1) people feel we've had too much legal migration in recent years 2) we should mitigate the effects of that by extending settlement periods and 3) we are unlikely to have too much legal migration in future

I mean obviously there's no monocause. But if you take Campbell's point and add in the specifics of our media environment, our exposure to GFE + austerity + Brexit + particularly high inflation + various migration issues, I think it helps explain why most PMs flopping fast.
