iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

There's a weird transition between loving something creative and being the steward of its creation. It's easy to stay a fan of it, but it's important to...not be. That's strange, isn't it? I think most creatives would deny this notion, but I think loving something inhibits your creative output.

Thanks! Nothing wrong with keeping it in the DC family. I love DC.

I was employing more lighting and shadow layers in the early part of the piece and then tying things together with some color that sat over the entire piece. I think color is probably my weakest area at the moment, so I wanted to push myself to develop that more. Always focus on your weakness.

Been experimenting a lot more with different techniques and trying to elevate my work. So here's Harley Quinn because of course I was going to draw Harley. Are there characters I should try with some of these more experimental techniques? How'd I do on this one?

Illustration of Harley Quinn sitting on bags of money with her hyenas.

Sounds like a good easy treat, but I'm dieting. Having one of my first major junk food cravings.

Nom nom nom! Give me unhealthy snacks!

I made a joke to someone today about not bringing my Pulitzer with me, and how I usually wear it on chain around my neck. But then the metaphor became a little too real and it stopped being funny.

Yea. I could imagine having similar reactions. I tried to use my time to study what people were doing in artist alley, and look at how things have changed. It really helped me clear some cobwebs, though. Stop trying to go in five directions and just pick one and run with it.

Yea. I wasn't going to go, but I got a last minute offer for a ticket and I've needed to get out a bit. It really was absolutely overwhelming.

I did sneak around NYCC today. If you were there and didn't see me, my bad. I tried to say hi to everyone I recognized. It was also pretty overwhelming. Been like six years since I've been to NYCC and didn't realize it had become the Whatnot booth guest starring NYCC.

So, if I were to go to NYCC tomorrow, who should I see? What should I do?

Every damn thing I see online looks like AI now. It's all just eating itself and spitting out even mushier versions of itself.

Was commissioned to do a sketch cover of the Continuity Comics character Samuree. Continuity is the publishing company my father started. I sketch this up idea and, while waiting for approval, turned it into an illustration all on its own. Now I just need to make the sketch cover live up to this...

Digital illustration of comic character, Samuree, in an action pose, ready to kick while holding a sword, in a neon Tokyo street.

Right, NYCC is going on this week/weekend.

Would certainly take some sort of daredevil to pack their tangerines in that floss!

Yea. I think when the book she was in was first published in the late 80's the costume was vaguely more appropriate and then with each succeeding artist that took it over it became...this...

Politicians manipulate us, toxic people in our lives manipulate us...but no one does it better than the DuoLingo bird.

I think car doors are designed to hit other cars. They open an inch and then if you push it any harder it swings out with a speed and force like it's trying to knock out the car parked next you.

Thanks! It was a real pill to basically toss the work on the background for the benefit of the piece. Happy it worked out.

It's conceivable that this is a bit of Bootstrap paradox and that photo is evidence that I already invented animation...

If only you had a time machine to hide the fact that this post was delayed just long enough for you to Google who invented animation. But was Reynaud the inventor of animation or the inventor of projected animation?

The funniest part of it is that when you make that decision and see the result, it's like it was always the plan. That is was always meant to be that way.

I think we're just talking about animation the long way around.

The absence of any form of sound or even visuals does make it better than many others.

Did a piece, illustrated a heck of a lot of background. Got to the end of the piece and blurred out the background and now it looks so much better. Sigh.

Putting the finishing touches on the first comic cover I've done in ages. Sadly, can't share it. But I'm game to do more if anyone needs awesome covers for their comic.

Nothing makes the futility of making money as an artist more salient than drawing money in an illustration you're doing with no intent to make profit on.
