Alongside high counts of commoner species (up to 670 Blackcaps!!) and scarcer birds they have been a few great highlights! Including a Greenish Warbler (✅ 364) and a self-found Little Bunting (✅ 365) which bring my YearList to #328

I've spent much of my past few weeks birding in Beauduc an isolated "island" village in Camargue which forms an incredible migrant trap and is accessible via a rough track across 3kms of salt flats which separates it from the "mainland" ebird.org/tripreport/5...

Whilst searching for Goshawk during an extended lunch break today I finally caught up with a Black Vulture #326 on the YearList (still no Goshawks however...)

Over the moon (to put it mildly) to find this first year male SIBERIAN BLUE ROBIN in our garden at Hillwell, Shetland this morning. The fifth record for Britain and a first for Shetland. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds #UKWildlife

Turtle doves to be shot for sport again across Europe as EU lifts hunting ban
Ban in place since 2021 has increased numbers of globally vulnerable pigeon species that is close to extinction in UK Turtle doves will be allowed to be shot for sport again across Europe, as the EU lifts a ban on hunting that was credited with the species’ tentative recovery. The EU will allow hunters to shoot 132,000 birds across Spain, France and Italy after a population boom for the threatened bird in western Europe due to a hunting ban that came into effect in 2021. They truly are moderate, in Europe they'd probably be considered centre-left or left, not hard/extreme left what they campaign for basically exists in loads of countries already the US give off a truly archaic image by calling ideas like free medical care for all extreme when it's the bare minimum

Tengmalm's Owl (✅296) yesterday somewhere on Mt Ventoux 👀! It has bred in the area in the past but the last confirmed sightings are from 2006 (although the secretive nature of this species mean it may have stayed undected all along), big thanks to the observer who 1st recorded the bird on the 19th!

In southern France I regularly have some during my vismig sessions and some sights reach over 50 during spring vismigs! So the species must be migratory to a certain extent?! (perhaps not in the UK though?)

I'm from France and I find it hard to believe that this aspect of society could be worse in the UK we have hardly no mainstream media that goes against capitalism media in anyway either?!

Joseph Rowsome @josephrowsome.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
000
Joseph Rowsome @josephrowsome.bsky.social · 23/12/2024

000
Joseph Rowsome @josephrowsome.bsky.social · 23/12/2024

European Herring/Yellow-legged Gull, the 1st being local rarity (only 1 previous county record). The colour and dirty head point to a HG but small the white spots to the end of primaries and overall head structure (as pointed out by others) point to a YLG

My 1st time "Gulling" today at the only local dump (in Vaucluse), misty weather and limited views of the main pile on which gulls were feeding made things difficult! Amongst many Yellow-legged Gulls and Black headed Gulls >2 1cy Lesser Black-backed Gull and 1 Euro Herring/YL Gull (photos below ⬇️)

Little Bunting recorded migrating over Mt Ventoux with a remote recorder on October 22nd (following the Olive-backed Pipit on the same spot last autumn) quite decent for an inland site! 2nd county record for Vaucluse (last one was in November 2005)

Joseph Rowsome @josephrowsome.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
I recently made this graph cumulating the last 10 years of Dotterel observations from Mt Ventoux the drop in mid-September could reflect a lack of observer pressure or the 2 peaks often observed with the 1st being mainly adults and the 2nd mainly 1cy birds
020
Joseph Rowsome @josephrowsome.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
Much of the data from mid-September on is collected through remote recording so the number of individuals is a conservative estimate a doesn't account for potential turnover

Joseph Rowsome @josephrowsome.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
Sorting through Dotterel photos from August on Mt Ventoux. This year we reached a total of 14 (between the 22nd of August and the 19th of October), down from the record 30 of 2023. This is likely also down to less prospection in September and a lower effort altogether. 🧵
