Everyone notices all the jobs they can't get! 🤣 (though I'll humbly argue that us sociologists of religion have it the worst). I do think that crim/health soc are often about inequality (crime caused by inequality, health inequality, etc.) even if many inequality scholars couldn't get those jobs.

I've literally done this (rightly or wrongly 🤷‍♂️) with students interested in grad school. I said "Take your interests and spin them to relate to inequality." Because I went on the job market a couple of years ago and remember all the "inequality, broadly construed" jobs I had no chance at.

True, but this downplays the formative work that happens at university. Students are learning what is "interesting" to sociologists and how to package their ideas. Advisors see what jobs are available (inevitably "inequality, broadly construed") and encourage students make themselves hireable.
