Two interesting metabolic health studies published this month! 👉🏽 Effect of sweeteners on weight management and gut microbiota composition in individuals with overweight or obesity: the SWEET study 🔘 ~1.6 kg improvement in across all participants 🔘 ~3.8 kg improvement in the highest adherence group
Graph showing the difference in weight loss maintenance between sweetener and sugar groups. The sweetener group regained significantly less body weight over 12-months.

In my latest Substack, I cover the science of how biology fights back after weight loss: 🔘 Metabolic adaptation (or not…) 🔘 Hunger hormone shifts 🔘 Heightened reward sensitivity to food cues 🔘 A potential “memory” of obesity in fat cells 🔗 josephmatthewsphd.substack.com/p/the-bigges...

What is dietary protein quality? New paper in the Journal of Nutrition. My first, first-author paper since joining UAMS. Dietary protein quality is the ability of a protein source to provide bioavailable essential amino acids (EAAs). But what affects this…?👇🏽 🔗 shorturl.at/elQLE

New study suggests a higher plant-to-animal protein ratio is associated with lower risks of CVD and CAD. I find these studies challenging to interpret given the underlying data used in the analyses: "A food frequency questionnaire was administered every 4 years to determine dietary intake"

“Cellular engineering has already allowed us to rebuild parts of humans with re-engineered cells. As our understanding of this arena grows, new medical and ethical conundrums will arise, intensifying and challenging the basic definition of who we are, and how much we wish to change ourselves.”

Views about the causes of obesity have polarised. Characterised by low carb and energy balance models. Last year NovoNordisk invited the protagonists of these models to Copenhagen to discuss commonalities and differences. The resultant paper has now been published in Nature Metabolism rdcu.be/dZryb

Left, a non-randomized study showing that saunas significantly decrease arterial stiffness. Right, a randomized, crossover study, showing no benefits on arterial stiffness/blood flow. Note the colossal difference in media attention. In the media, sensational studies > robust ones. #science #media

In clinical research, you will often receive feedback on study design, stats, and/or data analysis from an editor or reviewer that is simply wrong. Here is a list of common "statistical myths" and references you can use to push back. discourse.datamethods.org/t/reference-...
