Love @whurley.bsky.social vision at the intersection of #AI & #QuantumComputing. 0s & 1s can’t match our brains - QC might. But w/o AI we can’t effectively interpret & harness QC. True #AGI might require co-evolution of AI & QC. Could we learn from how our brains evolved? #AAASmtg 🧪

I’ve heard several questions at the #AAASmtg about how to avoid an #AI driven uptick in research fraud. The answer is to also use AI as a catalyst of transparent science and increased sharing of results, data, etc. #openscience 🧪

Enjoying the start of the #AAASmtg in Denver! Looking forward to more conversations about breaking down the walls keeping most research from ever getting shared - and doing it in a way that doesn’t burden scientists or deplete research funds. 🧪

Will we never learn that facetime is a terrible proxy for productivity? Great article demonstrating how destructive that mindset is We need to fundamentally rethink work, building structures that reward actual value created at work, instead of who fakes it the best

Wild… while there are valid concerns around information sharing on certain topics with certain countries, no way this should be (1) addressed at the state level, and (2) dealt with in such a blunt & prohibitive manner Strive for openness in science - restrict only where absolutely necessary 🧪

As a mgmt consultant, I could totally see some of my colleagues doing that 😂

Beyond the great points they make in the article, I think it’s also critical to include and amplify the voices of small emerging players A thriving AI startup ecosystem will be critical to realize the full potential of the technology. Big tech alone won’t get there

#Science has a knowledge management problem… What happens to all the #research results that never got published? What if there was a way to share and bring out the full value of all that ‘lost’ knowledge… 🧪📖

Would love to be added - link to my PhD thesis: thesis.library.caltech.edu/13668/1/LJS_... Currently working in the science space but stealth right now. More to come!

Should this really be viewed as a scale of visualization vs inner monologue, as the comments imply? I visualize things in detail - I also engage in extensive inner monologues I suspect it’s more of a superposition of 1 and 5, with differing probabilities for different people

Odd disconnect, both in academia & my current work in mgmt consulting Both are work cultures established when practitioners were almost exclusively male + norm to have a wife taking care of home & personal Surprising that some think that still works in a world with any semblance of gender equality

I do think part of the challenge is that colleges have been restrictive on free speech in some cases (e.g., faculty saying something uncomfortable), but in other cases treat free speech as sacred I don’t have an answer on what’s right here, but I do see the disconnect

Hypothesis for future research: the average American feels most of their life lacks purpose, except for a few moments of hiking

What more - because it’s anxiety driven, anyone challenging the need to overwork and the “hours = productivity” sentiment becomes highly threatening Tricky cultural problem to solve! I do think science demands a high level of dedication, but hours worked is not a reliable proxy for that

I mean sell a template - not the work itself! :)

Wise words… As a grad student, I counterintuitive found that the less I worked the more productive I was I believe it’s an elaborate procrastination culture. The anxiety provoking uncertainty of research leads us to drown ourselves in low impact work, so we can avoid the scary high impact stuff
