New demo for embedding Shaper dashboards into your own software. It uses a healthcare dataset. Pick an insurance to log in as and the dashboard only shows that insurance's data. The video also shows my workflow for developing embedded dashboards. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ilz...

Luckily we have many great tools nowadays to proactively detect potential threats. We already ensured that our dependencies don't introduce vulnerabilities, but now we also scan the code for other threats ranging from password leaks to SQL injection.

Shaper now runs a dedicated security pipeline for any code changes. Why? I am seeing too many reports of open source projects and companies having data breaches and other security issues lately. And my biggest nightmare is to wake up one day and see that this happened to any Shaper users. 1/2

I like it. UX feels like old Spotify. Has all the music I need. But mainly switched for ideologically reasons - prefer more money going to artists and less to warfare.

I spent most of my day in a single markdown file: It's my todo list. It's where I think through concepts. It's where I draft mails, Github issues and content. I have been doing this for years. But since coding agents, even coding is just copying over prompts into my terminal.

We just added Single Sign-On functionality to Shaper. And we made it open source. Here is why. taleshape.com/blog/why-ope...

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 Wow! DuckDB just surpassed 40k stars on GitHub. Thank you to everyone whose contributions, bugfixes, and – of course – stars made this milestone possible. 🦆✨ Here's (a very brief bit of) what’s happened since the last 10k-star milestone: duckdb.org/2026/08/05/g... Next stop: 50k. 💪🏽

New Shaper Feature: Single Sign-On Shaper now supports external user management with JWT-based SSO. No separate user login to manage. No password to remember. And it's open source and free to use. See it in action:

One of the best things I did in 2026 so far is reading fiction again. Got an ereader. Downloaded a bunch of books and manga. This plus no more phone in the bedroom.

Shaper queries live data directly from @motherduck.com instead. Same as the other tools, Shaper is fully code-driven - when the dashboard definition changes in Git, it's are deployed automatically. Live dashboard: dbt.taleshape.cloud/view/j66rhu7... Code: github.com/jorinvo/fusi...

How does Shaper compare to other data visualization tools? @dataders.bsky.social built a cool project to compare 10+ code-based dashboarding tools. The project is completely code-based and processes data with DBT, then visualizes the results. Most of the tools directly generate static HTML. 1/2

I like the idea of just deploying binaries and run them directly with SystemD, but in practice I always just run everything in Docker and let the Docker daemon handle it. Do you have anything you run on servers without containers?
001
Jorin @jorin.me · 27/07/2026
All I need is to run a a few dozen docker containers, put a load balancer in front of it and automate deployments. Yes, Anisble, Coolify, Kamal, and friends exist. But a few lines of Bash does all I need. And working with shell scripts is surprising pleasant if you don't have to write them yourself.

The mountain of yaml files that comes with that is more bearable when Claude generates them for you. But that doesn't change the fact that you are managing multiple distributed systems before your app ever runs. 2/3

2026 is the year of Bash. I am back to managing servers with shell scripts. Docker Swarm and Nomad are dead. It's all Kubernetes now. 1/3

And it's easier than ever to run Linux: 1. Valve/SteamOS do amazing work - especially for gaming. 2. AI completely changes how accessible it is to customize your setup and fix issues. 3. And so many great distros to choose from these days.

Jorin @jorin.me · 15/07/2026
1. Windows and Mac keep adding bloat you don't want. 2. Hardware is changing fast and prices too. No better feeling than upgrading your own hardware. 3. You want to run containers and AI models at full performance. 2/3

Added a new chart type to @taleshape.com: Scatter Plots This is how you define this chart in SQL: SELECT 'Session Durations'::LABEL; SELECT created_at::XAXIS, category::CATEGORY, duration::SCATTERPLOT, FROM dataset GROUP BY ALL ORDER BY ALL; Docs for more: taleshape.com/shaper/docs/...

Jorin @jorin.me · 28/05/2026
And as always, defined directly in the SQL query. More in the docs: taleshape.com/shaper/docs/...

New @aleshape.com Visualization Option: Confidence Bands Allows you to show a band for a line chart which is great to show extra statistical context (the confidence of a prediction, the spread of a distribution, etc) It's a nice middle ground between only show a line and showing a full Boxplot

Did you know you can download @taleshape.com dashboards with SQL? Use Shaper's API to download PDFs, images, Excel files and so on. Call the API with the DuckDB http_client extensions from a Shaper task to post charts to Slack, email a weekly PDF report or automate anything else you can think of.

It's not pretty but works. In the future I will add SQL functions similar to the macro to generate files without needing an API key. And I am thinking to create a generic DuckDB extension to send mail, slack messages and so. Can also generate png, excel, csv & json. Will dm you the code!

Yeah, before you have to build your own wrapper with a small server and API. Now you can literally do this from the duckdb CLI. Pretty neat :)
010
Jorin @jorin.me · 25/05/2026
Nice, so you basically use it to synchronize data between two duckdb instances without needing to build a custom API for it right?

Jorin @jorin.me · 25/05/2026
I plan to add SQL functions to send mail and render files soon. If you are interested I am happy to send you a SQL snippet for your specific use case.

Jorin @jorin.me · 25/05/2026
Yes, although it's a bit manual at the moment: You can use shaper tasks to run SQL in a schedule, then use the http_client duckdb extension to call shaper's own API to generate a PDF and then call an email API.

You can already see how these commands are really helpful for an AI agents. Plus with tasks and setup scripts moving right next to your dashboard files agents can do even more on their own.

Last week I ran into a great use case for UNPIVOT: The dataset had the columns p25, p50, p75. But to visualize it with @taleshape.bsky.social we want to use the column name as CATEGORY and the column value as LINECHART. And UNPIVOT does exactly that in a single line of code.
010
Jorin @jorin.me · 07/05/2026
Did you know duckdb.org's UNPIVOT feature? You rarely need them but from time to time PIVOT and UNPIVOT really help to keep your SQL easy to read: PIVOT turns one row into multiple columns. UNPIVOT turns columns into multiple rows. 1/2
