Open source is wild: NPM package "braces" - 190 million WEEKLY downloads. Half the internet depends on it. Last updated: 2 years ago. Now: Critical security vulnerability that blocks thousands of build pipelines. For two weeks already.

Shaper now runs a dedicated security pipeline for any code changes. Why? I am seeing too many reports of open source projects and companies having data breaches and other security issues lately. And my biggest nightmare is to wake up one day and see that this happened to any Shaper users. 1/2

New Shaper Feature: Single Sign-On Shaper now supports external user management with JWT-based SSO. No separate user login to manage. No password to remember. And it's open source and free to use. See it in action:

How does Shaper compare to other data visualization tools? @dataders.bsky.social built a cool project to compare 10+ code-based dashboarding tools. The project is completely code-based and processes data with DBT, then visualizes the results. Most of the tools directly generate static HTML. 1/2

Added a new chart type to @taleshape.com: Scatter Plots This is how you define this chart in SQL: SELECT 'Session Durations'::LABEL; SELECT created_at::XAXIS, category::CATEGORY, duration::SCATTERPLOT, FROM dataset GROUP BY ALL ORDER BY ALL; Docs for more: taleshape.com/shaper/docs/...

And as always, defined directly in the SQL query. More in the docs: taleshape.com/shaper/docs/...

New @aleshape.com Visualization Option: Confidence Bands Allows you to show a band for a line chart which is great to show extra statistical context (the confidence of a prediction, the spread of a distribution, etc) It's a nice middle ground between only show a line and showing a full Boxplot

Did you know you can download @taleshape.com dashboards with SQL? Use Shaper's API to download PDFs, images, Excel files and so on. Call the API with the DuckDB http_client extensions from a Shaper task to post charts to Slack, email a weekly PDF report or automate anything else you can think of.

It's not pretty but works. In the future I will add SQL functions similar to the macro to generate files without needing an API key. And I am thinking to create a generic DuckDB extension to send mail, slack messages and so. Can also generate png, excel, csv & json. Will dm you the code!

Skills for @taleshape.com are here: Use with Claude Code/Codex/Gemini to create dashboards quickly. With the skills the agent knows Shaper SQL, validates the create dashboard and gives you a preview URL once ready. More here: github.com/taleshape-co...

Did you know duckdb.org's UNPIVOT feature? You rarely need them but from time to time PIVOT and UNPIVOT really help to keep your SQL easy to read: PIVOT turns one row into multiple columns. UNPIVOT turns columns into multiple rows. 1/2

The @taleshape.bsky.social docs now have live examples 📊 Examples are now embedded as live dashboards instead of only screenshots. With this you can also directly see the differences between light and dark mode:

Is anyone else getting flooded with pull requests with numeric titles and cryptic descriptions in Chinese? I'll take it as a sign for @taleshape.bsky.social getting more popular 🙌

Did you know you can build a data analytics agent without the LLM ever seeing your data? That's what we did. We teach the LLM about your data and let it generates SQL. Then we use our open-source tool Shaper generate charts/PDF reports/Excel files and send them directly to you. 1/2

@duckdb.org is such a flexible tool that it's hard to categorize. Is it SQLite for analytics? Is it a SQL query engine for any data source? A dataframes alternative? A lightweight data lake?

It's probably the best time ever to get into game development: We gotta make use of all those GPUs out there somehow. And if any of those claims about our productivity in the near future are true, we should have lots of time to play games soon!

Did you know that with @duckdb.org you can directly query your database schema? When you combine this with considerate comments on your tables and columns it becomes a powerful tool to build agents and other systems that dynamically discover and learn to use your data.

Fiction is a great teacher:
“Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.”

Working on something fun for @taleshape.bsky.social 👀 Send SQL get back an image or PDF report? Soon: Official API to generate downloads. Point to a dashboard or just send a SQL string. Either get back a file directly or get a URL to a file. And files can be data: JSON/CSV/XLSX, or also PDF or PNG.

@taleshape.bsky.social now has "watermarks" for chart download to make it easy for your customers to credit you. One of the companies I work with integrated Shaper into their product. And now their customers use various dashboards regularly as part of their daily work. 1/2

I will be speaking at FOSSASIA this year to show how to quickly visualize data entirely in SQL using Shaper and DuckDB! I had a great time as participant last year: Great energy and many interesting conversations about what everyone is building in open source - in Asia and around the globe.

My favorite part about @taleshape.bsky.social Box Plots: You can define what what to show when hovering an outlier data point to make it directly actionable.

Jorin @jorin.me · 17/11/2025
Box Plots just shipped in @taleshape.bsky.social: Quickly visualize data distributions with a single line of SQL. Thanks to @duckdb.org macros you just type "BOXPLOT(my_value)" to calculate all statistics - including outliers. Give it a try: github.com/taleshape-co...

Boxplots are coming to @taleshape.bsky.social! And I just created a DuckDB helper function to do the math for you. Pretty neat that that's possible as a simple macro. Makes using boxplots straight forward. And please tell me if I got the math wrong somehow 🙏

Did you know that you can download @taleshape.bsky.social dashboards as PDF? Thanks to chromedp we can generate PDFs server-side, in the same Docker image. Thanks @mvdan.cc! Means you get consistent PDF files - even on mobile or using an unusual browser.

Do you prefer light or dark theme for your dashboards? Shaper supports both: taleshape.com/shaper/docs/

With @taleshape.bsky.social chart annotations are just another SQL query: You can load calendar events or goal lines from any data source and display them in your charts. And not only chart annotations - any text, label or dropdown in Shaper can be generated dynamically.

CREATE TEMP TABLE and getvariable() are my favorite DuckDB features. Thanks to this DuckDB is a natural fit for interactive data dashboards. Temporary tables allow you to define datasets once and reuse them across a dashboard. Variables make defining dynamic data filters intuitive.

I would probably never have built a data visualisation tool if I knew before how much math it takes. Somehow I imagined charting libraries handle it all. But here I am coming up with algorithms and magic numbers to properly format chart legends and labels no matter what data you throw at Shaper.

This feedback is the reason I am building @taleshape.bsky.social: I want to create dashboards by simply writing SQL. And I want a tool that feels great to self-host. #duckdb #dataengineering #datanalytics #sql

DuckDB is awesome and it’s a great tool to explore and transform data. But DuckDB doesn’t help you visualize and share data with others. That's why I built Shaper: taleshape.com/blog/turn-yo... #duckdb #databs #dataengineering

Can you tell that these 2 SQL queries do the same thing? DuckDB comes with lots of conveniences for writing SQL. I don't want to go back to thinking about trailing commas ever again,

Shaper now supports a cool DuckDB feature: Temporary Tables. Temporary tables allow you to pre-compute data to reuse within a single dashboard. Seeing how nicely temporary tables integrate into Shaper makes me feel great about the bet to make Shaper dashboards essentially just SQL scripts.

Shaper now supports public dashboard sharing and I added a public demo dashboard to the landing page. I was looking forward to this feature to easily share examples and use Shaper to play around with public datasets. taleshape.com #dataviz #buildinpublic

I just learned about Malloy. Such an intriguing alternative to SQL for not only querying, but also modeling data. And they have a concept to tag values which can be used to render data. That's even more elegant to what I try to do in SQL using types. www.malloydata.dev
