Europeans need to decide whether its pledge to stand by Ukraine “as long as it takes” has an upper limit. If it doesn’t, they need to seriously step up on all fronts (military, financial, sanctions) to ensure Ukraine can stay in the fight — possibly until Trump leaves office.

Jorge Liboreiro @jorgeliboreiro.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Europeans are determined to prevent such disastrous scenario. But Russia’s brutal escalation is fast raising costs for Ukraine and European support could run dry as soon as next year. Far-right parties are polling high and borrowing cost are squeezing budgets. There are no easy solutions.
2121
Jorge Liboreiro @jorgeliboreiro.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
For Europeans, the episode reaffirms the long-held belief the US talks are essentially designed to secure a deal at the expense of Ukraine by weakening the country’s defences, making human suffering intolerable and obtaining the surrender of the Donbas so that Putin signs up and Trump claims a win.
1141
Jorge Liboreiro @jorgeliboreiro.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
The diesel deal comes amid speculation of other deals (including one about the Lukoil assets) that give Russia opportunities to make extra money, dent the impact of European sanctions and further escalate the war. All of that without making a single concession at the negotiating table.
1121
Jorge Liboreiro @jorgeliboreiro.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Even if the material impact of the diesel deal is limited, it has tremendous implications for diplomacy: the US shows that it’s ready to strike deals with Russia while bombs rain down on Ukrainian cities. Until now, the US had said deals should come at the end of the war, not during.
1183
Jorge Liboreiro @jorgeliboreiro.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Since Trump’s reelection, Russia has pushed to undercut the common Western front. It engaged in the US-led talks with the goal of securing sanctions relief, a no-go for Europeans. It failed until the Iran war sent prices soaring. Ahead of midterms, Trump panicked and caved in. First oil, now diesel.
1142
Jorge Liboreiro @jorgeliboreiro.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
As the dust settles, it becomes evident the Trump-Putin deal will have a minimal impact on energy markets. Russia’s refinery production is badly damaged by Ukrainian strikes. The world burns 30 million diesel barrels per day. Russia can’t keep up. What truly matters is politics. 🧵
