I should probably turn my Bluesky notifications on--what a fun thing to see when I accidentally open this app! Shouts out to Scott once again; it was absolute pleasure to work with him.

Also finished Lonesome Dove and it may be an all-time favourite. However, recency bias does go brr, so I will need to watch this space

Halfway through Lonesome Dove now. This book does not let up man

I've hit about 40% of the way through it last night and it just keeps getting better to be honest!

25% of the way through Lonesome Dove and this book is so good man. Can see it cracking my favourites of all time at this rate

My one-short-story-a-year publishing streak is unbroken, bosh. What this tells me, though, is that I really need to pull my finger out and write more!

Excited to say that I have signed on the dotted line with @bcsmagazine.bsky.social and my story about space-faring monks and Anglo-Saxon kings will appear there later on in the year :) Thanks to Scott for his in depth editorial work which brought the story into being the best version it could be!

Rereading Kindred for Bookclub and damn I forgot how much I love Octavia Butlers writing & how brutal this novel is

Trying to decide between Parable of The Sower and Kindred for bookclub. Both are banging books, but I'm just not sure which to put forward for our next read

Just realised I referred to Anglian Water as Anglican water; that's being put down to dehydration induced delirium. In other news, we have water now. Big win

2200 has come and still no water

Anglican Water turned off around water around 12 today, with little notice. Said it'd be back on a 1800. Workers left at 1700. The time we'd get water back updated to 2200. It is now 2125. No workers can be seen. So, unless they're holding back our water for a laugh, I doubt I'm getting it back.

No worries! I found the tub if you're curious about the brand etc. Interestingly enough, it's 0% caffine, so I imagine brewing it in Red Bull was a creative solution people did to get a kick

Query Letter and synopsis wrote. Now, time to wait for beta feedback on the book...

My fiancè is Lithuanian; it's popular in the Baltics, I believe. As such, we have some acorn coffee squirrelled away somewhere... I might have to dig it out and brew it with Red Bull now.

Finally finished the novel I started back during my MA in 2022 or so. Like, it's almost ready for query, just waiting on Beta's to say it's ready😎 Now to write the synopsis and query letter...

So far, the only things I've published are stories I wrote during my MA two years ago, so in two years' time, I expect to see the stuff I'm writing now out in the world😅 It's all about persistence. Rejections sometimes still get to me, but I now realise it often doesn't correlate with quality!

My biggest accomplishment of the past few weeks is getting a "high-tier" rejection from Asimovs. Let's go. Progress is being made!

Trying to decide when a short story is ready for the submissions gauntlet is harrowing
100
JJ @jordonjones98.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
True, I like to try and forget as much as I can before another draft tbh. Hopefully I'll think it's amazing and needs very little work but that's unlikely ahahaha

JJ @jordonjones98.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
Wrote a short story last month that has gone through atleast 4 drafts and I havent done anything with it yet. Not touched it since I wrapped up last draft so need to give it a read and see if i still like it lmao

JJ @jordonjones98.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
Today has been productive. Finished the draft to a short story, got a rough plan for a second, and an idea for a third. They'll keep me productive for a little while.

JJ @jordonjones98.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
Was too focussed on the idea that the story needs to be plausible like nah, let's get weird with it. My brain my rules

JJ @jordonjones98.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
Feel like I've been writing with blinders on for past few months. Forgot that I can literally write about whatever the hell I want, and remembering that is pretty liberating

This is what happens when you get marketing suggestions on Discord. (And because it's not in the actual image, you can find us at clarkesworldmagazine.com)
I can't begin to apologize enough for this visual travesty. Our robot mascot is the largest element. It sits in the lower right, with a flower wreath on it's head and a waving capybara is poking out from it. In the top left, there's a screaming possum, yelling READ CLARKESWORLD!!! Our robot will be sad if you don't. Across the top it says The only science fiction magazine that is possum approved! Oh, and I forgot to mention that this includes the most offensive fonts, primarily comic sans, but also papyrus, brush script, and courier. I won't pain you by explaining each use. Oh and wingdings, which is under the approval notice. Apparently, it's Clarkesworld in wingdings. How did I forget to say that the background is blue and most of the text is pink? Next down from the top is an area just labeled This space intentionally left blank, then the possum speak. Now we have No Zombies Allowed even with the capy, who by the way has lens flares arcing down and away from the robot. That runs into a sloth with its arms and legs outward, like it is falling. It's saying fun! As it falls towards a hole, which has above it, Get the hole story! a callout to Isabel J. Kim's story that's on so many award ballots this year. Above the sloth, it says science fiction written by humans! and below the robot's chin, it says Online now! In the bottom right corner is the I'm just a girl hamster with subscribe written over it's head. The text is at all sorts of angles. Chaos reigns. And nowhere does it say where you can find Clarkesworld.

I've been working on my main WIP since mid 2022--I think. Between graduating my MA and starting work I've not been able to put as many hours into it as I want. However, one benefit of taking so long whilst continuing to read, write short stories etc is it does a good job of showing my growth

Could bake my own pie, and I do enjoy baking and I can throw together a pretty good pie but it would feel like stolen valor. I'm not from Wigan. It should only be built in the proper institution. That is a chippy.

JJ @jordonjones98.bsky.social · 22/05/2025
My biggest regret is that, before leaving my home town for greener pastures, I never popped over to Wigan for a proper Wigan Slappy. And popping a frozen pie in a barm seems like it would do a disservice to the greatest culinary innovation of north-west england

Dabbling in something different to the main WIP is a great way to stay motivated in my opinion. Although I say that and then look at my novel wip folder with two different quarter complete first drafts...

Atm its scifi and i want to get some shorts out there. But I dabble. My published short work consists of horror and "literary"(a term I dislike)fiction. My last major project was fantasy/scifi, but my current novel is scifi/fantasy lol. How about you? Primarily comic-fantasy or have you dabbled?
110
JJ @jordonjones98.bsky.social · 22/05/2025
Oh that sounds fun! How long have you been working on it? I've always enjoyed comedy-fantasy a la Terry Pratchett, although I imagine it's difficult to write
