I’d have to ask, but it’s the biggest library system in the country, so I can’t imagine them borrowing much from smaller ones. Supposedly I can make a request though, and they would consider it similar to a book request… but I’ll probably just end up paying $30 to buy Pragmata from someone.

This got me excited so I checked my local libraries, but neither the New York Public Library nor Brooklyn Public Library loan video games 😭

She was the best part of the movie to me; a really unexpectedly powerful performance I appreciated within a movie I found pretty poor.

I thought the visuals in the second act were cool, but I strongly disliked the story. Judging by the box office and profit margin though, I think you’ll get your way with a franchise.

No number can encapsulate a feeling, let alone a potentially complex weaving of feelings So no number can ever really mean anything about art

The only benefit to scores is avgs, and those are just as bad An average of 3 means something incredibly different if it's every reviewer scored it near 3 vs they all went either 1 or 5 And then, until reading individual reviews, who's taste aligns enough with yours that the avg is worth anything?

Adding to the hating on review scores, agreed on these points, but also, they're useless You give a game a 4, what does that mean? Does every 4 look the same to you? The answer is bound to be, no. The score needs to be contextualized. It's meaningless without the explanation, so, what's the point?

100% agree with Jordan here. One thing I’ll add is that review scores contribute to these kinds of lazy, reductionist conversations about art, which is why I loathe them.

Movies Don’t Need Reviews. They Need Something Else.
Reviews are about the writer as much as the art itself.

Review scores, frame rate, sales, player counts, price, etc. It all just feels like this nerd impulse to use Objective Math to avoid the uncomfortable realities of discussing subjective art. Annoyingly stockholder brained, too

Super Mario Galaxy is less a movie than a disordered string of miscellaneous happenings

Jordan Calhoun @jordanmcalhoun.com · 23/04/2026
Its characters have practically no arc, no internal conflict, and no growth. That’s not how you write characters you care about, but of course they don’t care. They wanted another profitable feature-length commercial and they got what they wanted

I think that’s the offense I take with IP properties like Mario: It so openly doesn’t care about the story or the audience it hustles, because it knows it’ll get away with a billion dollars

The Mario Galaxy Movie reminds me of the scene from Rounders where Matt Damon and Edward Norton hustled a group of frat boys, openly pulling tricks they’d never do anywhere else www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN2I...

Has it been long enough to criticize the Mario movie without people saying “iTs a kiDs mOviE” or “jUsT eNjOy iT”? It’s an affront to storytelling so blatant that it almost feels like the raptors testing the fences

There’s just an easier explanation: She (or more likely, her agent) gambled on being patient and getting more money, and now it’s the day before training camp, she lost the gamble, fired her agent, and now her new agent gotta negotiate from a weaker position

I’ve rolled my eyes at the politics theory, mostly because the WNBA is full of activists and it’s not like Natasha is a polarizing figure among players and fans. Quite the opposite, we all love her, etc.

Does anyone have evidence to suggest teams are blackballing Natasha Cloud for her politics? Or is this just speculation people accept in Earth-616 for content?

Fingers crossed! I think it's wild to have four ball-dominant shooters (Sabrina, Stewie, Satou, and JJ) on floor at the same time. We need players like Natasha and Leo who can distribute and play without the ball. We look great on paper right now, but I don't know if we're as good as we look...

I mean, we all stay on the masthead until after we get laid off 😅 I don't think she'll be traded, though...I think another team will offer her more money than we can afford with Satou, Stewie, Sabrina, and JJ

We were listening to Avril’s seminal classic debut album Let Go (kid is in her “Complicated” era), and she asked why some songs have music videos, and I said “those are the singles.” She goes, “what are singles?”

Jordan Calhoun @jordanmcalhoun.com · 10/04/2026
Had a moment listening to music with my daughter last night where I realized music singles don’t exist anymore. She had no concept of the idea. (I know they technically still exist, but not in the way I traditionally think of them as “the songs on the radio and with music videos.”

This reminds me of a general rule about trying to win a breakup. The only person who “wins” is the person who stops playing the game of trying to win and can live their life again.

I thought Zendaya was great, yeah. I think her performance is much of what salvaged a story that implicitly equates the redemption of a [redacted] with the antics of someone trying to cope with her past.

Love watching movies in theaters, I average 3x a week. I struggled with The Drama but I might have to write about it to process exactly what I didn’t like. I think the gist is that I feel the end of Charlie’s character arc feels contrived and unearned to me.

I don’t do Letterboxd or star ratings because it flattens nuance, but sounds like you liked The Drama more than Sentimental Value?

I think the biggest damage to the art community was the obsolescence of gallery sites (y!, deviantart, etc) and the rise of scroll-by social media, like twitter and even tumblr. Art is not ''content'', you shouldnt need to post art every day (or every month!) to be relevant. This mindset sucks.

The right applicants care about tech and helping others and are able to explain complicated processes in an understandable and approachable voice. They should also have shrewd judgment and a healthy skepticism of common advice!
