It’s really chilling to see this happening at a major newspaper chain. If you treat source relationships as mere quote harvesting, you devalue the entire enterprise.

This seems like an inevitable (and execrable) consequence of the mindset that wants to automate journalism and remove its essence - the process of increasing human understanding through inquiry and dialog - with something else entirely - the base production of content.

Which is not to say that the Times shouldn’t report on what it gets, just that it is worth thinking about who benefits from focusing attention on the state of mind of a teenager, versus the practices of a major institution
Cornell, citing student privacy rules, declined to give details about how the individual men were punished. It said Monday that it gave the men "a range of sanctions, which included expulsions and suspensions." Thomas Giuffra, the lawyer who represents Jane Doe, has said in interviews that only two of the men were expelled, and that his client did not feel justice had been done.

My impression of the public response to this case is that it is largely focused on the failure of institutions with a duty of care to respond to rape, not about an individual’s “journey from an unknown sophomore to the embodiment of another searing national dialogue about sexual assault”
What had not been known publicly, until now, were the detailed filings collected during the private Title IX proceedings — hundreds of pages of emails, text messages, photographs and interviews with Jane Doe, her friends and those she accused.
Taken together, the raw materials sketch Jane Doe's journey from an unknown sophomore to the embodiment of another searing national dialogue about sexual assault and consent.
(Although Jane Doe is identified in the documents, The Times is withholding her name.)

I have no idea how the Times obtained the Cornell investigation of the frat assault, but I am certainly curious about it, especially in light of the university’s solicitousness of the privacy of the accused when it comes to public demands for information about yhe school’s disciplinary procedures.

that's very cool. i do feel like the stuff we were able to do with interns at the union was so far beyond what most internships end up looking like. not just busy work but actually devising and running mini-campaigns on boycott targets etc. it's good training for so many things!

Julia Carrie Wong @joolia.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
ok for real though i also have a former local 2 intern who is now a trustee of city college in sf. 2010s local 2 interns are killing it

Julia Carrie Wong @joolia.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
sadly (happily) i no longer accept interns but there are definitely labor unions out there that would use your journalistic skills (finding shit out, holding a grudge, basically) on a volunteer basis esp if they do corporate campaigning or boycotts

Julia Carrie Wong @joolia.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
people who have been my interns have gone on to become a state senator and, today, a macarthur genius fellow, which is pretty cool considering that i have continued to just be me. perhaps the more pertinent lesson if you want to be impressive is to intern for your local labor union and become great

what’s it called when you use the structures of democracy to install a system of authoritarianism is there a word for that or any kind of historical precedent perhaps?
1565
Julia Carrie Wong @joolia.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
this is petty but I distinctly remember a certain tech journo scoffing at my long ago observation that Facebook’s supposed commitment to democracy was belied by its (at the time novel) share structure, which allowed Zuckerberg to maintain majority voting power after selling off a majority of shares
