Which is not to say that the Times shouldn’t report on what it gets, just that it is worth thinking about who benefits from focusing attention on the state of mind of a teenager, versus the practices of a major institution
Cornell, citing student privacy rules, declined to give details about how the individual men were punished. It said Monday that it gave the men "a range of sanctions, which included expulsions and suspensions." Thomas Giuffra, the lawyer who represents Jane Doe, has said in interviews that only two of the men were expelled, and that his client did not feel justice had been done.

My impression of the public response to this case is that it is largely focused on the failure of institutions with a duty of care to respond to rape, not about an individual’s “journey from an unknown sophomore to the embodiment of another searing national dialogue about sexual assault”
What had not been known publicly, until now, were the detailed filings collected during the private Title IX proceedings — hundreds of pages of emails, text messages, photographs and interviews with Jane Doe, her friends and those she accused.
Taken together, the raw materials sketch Jane Doe's journey from an unknown sophomore to the embodiment of another searing national dialogue about sexual assault and consent.
(Although Jane Doe is identified in the documents, The Times is withholding her name.)

The Israeli demand to strip NAZA filmmakers Abraham and Szor of citizenship so that they can be executed, their homes demolished, and their families expelled is neatly illustrative of how and why the apartheid state renders Palestinians as non-human www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...
A speaker at the demonstration also called to execute the film's co-creators, Szor and Yuval Abraham, while the crowd chanted
"Execute the traitors.' The man also called for their families' houses to be
demolished.
"When they return to Israel, they should be put on trial and sent to the gallows.
And their family should be deported and their home sealed, just as is done to terrorists," a man said through a megaphone.
"That is the only solution for traitors.
There is only one language to use with traitors. We're tired of being on the defensive. The people of Israel need to go on the offensive so that the next person knows not to mess with IDF soldiers."

“Not something that any encyclopedia reader or editor would, or should, be proud of, in my opinion.” put it on my tombstone
If we remove all the primary citations and focus on secondary, independent coverage, what kind of article are we left with? A permanent stub that says "Julia Carrie Wong is a female journalist who has written a few articles about Facebook and Sophie Zhang, and who has also been harassed online due to some of her tweets and writing." Not something that any encyclopedia reader or editor would, or should, be proud of, in my opinion. Note also that the routine mention in Talking Biz News is a self-published source. -

a museum in England, you say? www.reddit.com/r/legal/s/kt...
r/legal

u/FreemanPudding • 22h
England museum now says the sculpture l loaned for six months was a donation, although my signed receipt includes a return date. What should I request first?
Advice needed
Location: England
Last September I loaned a small sculpture to a local museum for a temporary exhibition. The receipt identifies me as the owner, describes the piece, and gives 31 March as the return date.
When I arranged collection, the curator said their database marks it as an unconditional donation. I asked for the document supporting that entry. They sent a one-page donor form bearing a typed version of my name, but no signature, date, or description of the sculpture. I have never seen that form before.
The museum has not threatened to dispose of the work, but it has refused collection while its commitee "reviews ownership." I still have the original receipt and emails describing the loan.
Should my next step be a formal demand for return, a request for their full accession records, or both? Is there any risk that waiting for their committee weakens my position?

This, by a psychiatrist, is not a bad piece, but the idea that *teenage girls* are the ones using diagnostic categories in a vibes-based way that is disconnected from "cold, scientific truths" is, if I may, projection. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/18/o...
It starts with accepting that diagnosis words may function differently for these young women from the way they do for others. They are not necessarily claims to cold, scientific truths, yoked to specific evidence-based treatments. Instead, research increasingly reveals, these words are often a coping mechanism, an effort to find some accepted narrative in which to situate one’s very personal pain. We should try to hear them that way: We should take the therapy-speak, to borrow an expression, seriously but not literally.

Rank misogyny masquerading as a criticism of journalism. Racicot saying that Platner had "'taken something that I said as an invitation' before she subsequently texted him not to come over" was an accurate description of the texts' content.
🚨NEW: Drop Site journalist Ryan Grim has authenticated behind-the-scenes messages showing Politico omitted an important detail from its reporting on how the night began that led to the rape allegations against Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner.

Before publication, a Politico reporter told the Platner campaign that Jenny Racicot, on the night in question, had been “texting [Platner] about needing her glute massaged.” The reporter added, “That detail didn’t make our story.”

Racicot told Jake Tapper during her CNN interview that Platner had “taken something that I said as an invitation” before she subsequently texted him not to come over. Tapper did not follow up to ask what the content of the message was, and did not respond to a request for comment from Drop Site. Politico, in a statement to Drop Site, did not dispute that the outlet was aware of the “glute masssage” text, and said that it would update its reporting if further information arose.

According to a spokesperson: “This story is based on extensive reporting and interviews and reflects our editorial standards. In interviews with us and in accounts she gave to other outlets, Jenny Racicot said that she told Graham Platner not to come to her home and that he nevertheless showed up there uninvited. POLITICO gave Platner and his campaign ample opportunity to respond to our reporting and to provide any information or documentation they believed contradicted it. If presented with information that materially challenges our reporting, we will report it.”

Platner is expected to drop out today.

"I know I speak for myself"
@jeremybarr

NEW: Bari Weiss just addressed the termination of Scott Pelley on the network's morning call just now.

Weiss: "I know I speak for myself, and I hope I speak for everyone here when I say that I'm only interested in working in a newsroom that is built on trust and mutual respect. We cannot do our work without it. That foundation was broken on Monday, and despite our attempts to engage with Scott Pelley and to find a way back, unfortunately we weren't able to do so, and so we had to part ways.

We did not want that to happen, but that's the path that he chose. That unfortunate outcome does not discount from the amazing contributions and work that Scott Pelley has done for CBS and for 60 Minutes over the course of his career."

She then listed some of his stories from the past season and called them "unforgettable stories."

some people said it was weird that I was talking about libidinal investments in a political campaign but I’m not the one who wrote about political candidates as “real-life barbie dolls with smooth plastic where a sexual organ should be” so who’s the weirdo now
People are done with the clean-cut types who've harbored ambitions for political office since they were on high school student council and have lived every waking moment accordingly. I call them smoothgroins: real-life barbie dolls with smooth plastic where a sexual organ should be. Think of the telegenic types like Gavin Newsom who never have a strand of hair out of place or much of anything to say (certainly not against the establishment). Think of Cory Booker, who at age 56 announced his first marriage, complete with a made-for-media rollout — clearly on the ridiculous
assumption that people still give a shit about their presidential candidate having a typical family. Think of Pete Buttigieg, a politician so allergic to public displays of affection with his spouse that his own
communications director publicly called him
"the Tin Man."
