Does Bridgerton count for this? Given it is very deliberately anachronistic?

People focus too much on Rule 34 and forget about Rule 35.

This seems a spectacularly poor system, where what is quite clearly fraud has been somehow protected as a matter of course. To call the outcome a viable legal system is nonsensical.

Isn't this what contracts are all about? The system at the moment generally appears to be appalling, write contracts, get building done, if what was promised was not delivered sue and take the money directly from the developer. If councils can't control contractors, who can?

And yet, when it comes to IHT so many people believe they are manor-owning folk who will be removed from the ancestral land.

I'm not sure the author does suggest that. The first 90% of the articles is just a series of arguments that the author presents in a way that is supposed to lead you to the conclusion he supports Argentinian sovereignty, simply so he can knock them down in the last, but one paragraph. It's bait.

Political investigations are too slow to achieve anything. Fundamentally democracies need to be thinking really hard about this. The original Russia investigation took 2 years. The Farage £5m still hasn't reported back. Even if successful it takes too long to be effective.

It would seem the Home Office has now acquired the ability to impose, without visibility or accountability, shadow bans on students coming to British universities from particular countries. How? Because of the interaction between indiv visa decisions (made by HO alone) and visa rules for unis 1/?

I think I understand the difference in the numbers. Although I'm not sure that realistically it means anything different. The vast majority of people, estates or deaths lead to zero IHT, with either number.

But it's still only taxed once. Is the 4% figure counting spouse Vs t+2years to children as a distinct estate?
100
Andrew Riley @jontia.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I don't understand this point, if there's no tax when the first spouse dies, then there's no IHT. How do we go from tax free transfer to a spouse to a doubling of the proportion of estates paying IHT?

Just don't see how we can justify a huge tax break to wealthy pensioners by removing stamp duty, or how you prevent those same pensioners (and everyone else) figuring out how much the person buying their home would save and whacking it onto the asking price. Stamp duty change just puts prices up.

Nothing. What was wrong (or at least weird) was that you could have a single parent family where the parent earned 60k (take home 45k) and revived no child benefit. And then you can have a couple on 50k each (household take home 80k) who receive full child benefit. So it's not a great setup.

Similarly the toxic nature of Schengen and the Euro in the UK can be traced back to a lack of understanding in many cases, which is why they need to be put up front of a rejoin effort. Not as single words on polling questions that rely on everyone's priors, but at the centre of positive change.

In some ways I think the rebate is more achievable. The recent stories about Ukraine entry, but then being held outside of agricultural subsidies shows an increasing awareness that CAP is not fit for purpose and was the root of the UK rebate. www.ft.com/content/8463...

I'd say we can only realistically get b) by ditching a). A full and frank conversation up front that the UK will sign up to these two is required because it helps with b) and the Sovereignty crowd will say we are getting them anyway. Even a commitment from the EU that we aren't willing be ignored.

I don't think it is a wedge. It feels more like the opposite a chance to say 'you had some change we are not talking about this again'. That's why so many rejected AV in 2009. The downside is that 2009 proved that rejecting a bad change can also lead to the 'not talking about it again' outcome.

We should assume they are requirements and start talking up their benefits. Most people probably have no idea what Schengen means on a practical basis. Or what might actually be easier/better for them with the Euro.

Again, I'd focus on exemptions. It simplifies the tax code and by definition hits only the mega wealthy who can afford to find the holes and set up weird structures to use them. Maybe it doesn't raise £20bn, but it cuts the tax code and makes it fairer. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-4188...

We ought to be just looking at the exemptions and getting rid of tax breaks that only go to huge companies already making loads of cash or purely jokes for rich people. Just this week we've seen a £265m house sale avoid £18m of stamp duty for example. Why? taxpolicy.org.uk/2026/09/22/n...

Why is it that no one has noticed that ultra-capitalist grifter Farage does not have the best interests of lower income folks at heart? This isn't exactly new news. From Insurance based health provision to blocking workers rights legislation to this today, this is who he is, but no one notices?

The UK tax code is around 22,000 pages. It is one of the longest and most complex tax codes in the world. Simplifying it would take work, and come with downsides, but the idea that it can't be done, that there isn't a button, does not seem credible.

There are already at least 3 major tiers of charging cost. Domestic is the cheapest, Street charging by lamp post chargers and fast commercial. Fast commercial is as expensive as petrol. Communal flat charging would presumably be around the lamp post level.
