A block away, a two-way street has just one lane, causing both vehicles to get stuck and rendering the street impassable for everyone. There is an elementary school on this block! (Behind where I stood.) I took this photo at arrival time. This is what DCPS is welcoming students back to.

This is what @ddotdc.bsky.social considers a cleared protected bike lane. It’s blocked by snow where I stood, and halfway down the block, it’s full of snow. There is no bike lane on this street right now. (Columbia Rd NW b/w 16th and 17th Sts.)

“Star Trek: Body by Starfleet: A Fitness Guide” is a silly read for anybody who is into Star Trek and fitness. If you’re new to either one, this isn’t the book for you. But if you want to see exercises reframed as Star Trek maneuvers, this will give you a smile.

In “Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen,” Jose Antonio Vargas describes the difficulty growing up as an immigrant, which multiplied when he learned he was undocumented. Published in 2018, it captures only some of the Trump administration’s war on immigrants.

The best book I read was also the oldest. In “Pedro & Me,” The Real World: San Francisco cast member Judd Winick remembers Pedro Zamora. For many gay men growing up in the 90s, Zamora was the most visible queer representation. Winick’s remembrance of his friend, killed by AIDS, brought me to tears.

I don’t know if she’s going to run for mayor, but these are the policy positions we should be hearing from the mayor’s office www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...
Lewis George argued that it would only fuel displacement — particularly in the neighborhoods surrounding the RFK Stadium site that is undergoing massive redevelopment to welcome back the Washington Commanders. Longtime residents living multiunit rowhouse rentals and small properties, common in that area, may be asked to move out without any TOPA rights, Lewis George said.

“If we’re serious — truly serious — about closing the racial wealth gap and creating opportunities for Black and brown residents to stay and thrive in D.C., then we must stop dismantling the very tools that make that possible,” she said. “We should be strengthening TOPA, supporting TOPA, not gutting it. We should be making it easier to own your own home in D.C., not making it impossible.”

The president’s takeover of the D.C. police will be temporary. Longer-term solutions will be needed.

Good morning from Malcolm X Park, where the only federal personnel onsite is one (1) person emptying trashcans. Also, someone wheatpasted this paper to a lamp post.
Heads up!
Be aware that this park is federal property.
In recent weeks, federal law enforcement officers have been carrying out Trump's
"Making DC Safe and Beautiful" executive order, and have arrested people in spaces like this one for infractions like open containers and marijuana possession.
Your risk of interactions with federal law enforcement is higher here. Stay smart and stay safe.
If you witness an interaction between law enforcement and community members, record the interaction on your phone if you feel safe doing so. Focus on the agents. Send recordings to DC Safety Squad at dcsafetysquad@proton.me. If you believe the interaction is immigration enforcement, send to Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid dcmigrantmutualaid.org/hotline. Involuntary commitment for unhoused individuals is also a risk here. If you or someone you know needs emergency shelter, please contact the Homeless Services Hotline at (202) 399-7093 or dial 311.

If the National Park Service wants DC to be “safe, beautiful, and prosperous,” maybe stop arresting picnickers and cut the grass/fix the fountain in Malcolm X Park. That’d be beautiful.
