In Google Maps one can see the paths from before they sowed new grass. They really can’t expect people to walk around as the red lines show.

Not far from my home the local authorities a fighting a losing battle against people’s desire paths. Every now and then, new fences are put up to keep people from crossing the lawn, and almost immediately they are removed. Time to give up and just create a proper path?!
A photograph of a path in across a lawn towards a road 20 metres away. A wire fence blocks access in the foreground and over by the road. However zooming in, one can see that the middle section of the fence has been removed. The path veers off the left of the photographer, where, not seen in the photo , the fence is also removed
The photographer’s shadow is visible in the picture.

Wrapping up my first day as head of the PhD school at our institute. No disasters so far… It’s also the first time ever that I was issued a stamp with my name and position for signing documents. This is a VERY IMPORTANT THING in Poland. All important papers need stamps!

Before that, a fence demarcated the border between ”The West” and ”Eastern Europe” as part of the Iron Curtain. Border regions are fascinating and, as is the case of Poland’s fluctuating borders, the history of this corner of Europe is complicated
One side of a memorial on the place of the old border fence with the text

In Slovene the square in front of the station is named Trg Evrope. The other side of the memorial reading „COMUNE DI NOVA GORICA

The Italian side of the square is known as Piazza della Transalpina. A tablet describing the history of the square
“The Bohinj/Transalpina Railway (Wocheinerbahn in German) was officially inaugurated in July 1906 as part of the Alpine railway system, which was built at the beginning of the 20th Century by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a whole, the network connected Vienna and Central Europe with the Adriatic regions, especially with Triest and its port. When the station opened, it was named in three languages: Staatsbahnhof Görz in German, Stazione Transalpina in Italian and Državni kolodvor Gorica in Slovenian. Later it was known as Northern Gorizia station and Gorizia Montesanto (Sveta Gora) railway station.
After the Second World War, the border between Yugoslavia and Italy was drawn across the square in front of the station. It was 1947, and the station became a symbol of the division of the Gorizia/Gorica area and of the construction of a new city called Nova Gorica.
In 2004, when Slovenia joined the European Union, the fence that divided the square and served as the state border was removed.
In its place, the square was created - an intensely symbolic space of unity between the cities of Gorizia and Nova Gorica and the two states.
Slovenians named it Europe Square, while Italians keeps alive the memory of their historic denomination with the name Transalpina.
The shared square was redeveloped in 2024 by the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation GECT GO / EZTS GO, founded by the Municipalities of Nova Gorica and Šempeter-Vrtoja on the Slovenian side and by the Municipality of Gorizia on Italian side of the border. In 2025 the square became the beating heart of the European Capital of

I was just reading an oldish paper (doi.org/10.1021/ja96...) from 1996 and I loved the note about the availability of Supplementary Information! We are so used to SIs now so it's easy to forget they were a novelty in 1996... as was the web itself.

3/ Looking in the referenced terminology paper (doi.org/10.1515/pac-...) isn't helpful either. Here, amperometery is measuring I while controlling E, while voltammetry is measuring I=f(t) while controlling E=f(t). Better just accept they're the same thing.
Method	Quantity measured	Quantity controlled
potentiometry	E	I=0
amperometry	I	E
voltammetry	I=f(t)	E=f(t)

2/ "Electrochemical measurement principle based on measurement of current at a controlled applied potential." & "Electrochemical measurement principle in which the electrode potential of a working electrode is controlled and the electric current measured." Guess which is which?
amperometry
https://doi.org/10.1351/goldbook.09128
Electrochemical measurement principle based on measurement of current at a controlled applied potential.
Notes:
The current is usually faradaic and the applied potential is usually constant.
Amperometry can be distinguished from voltammetry by the parameter being controlled (electrode potential E
) and the parameter being measured (electrode current I
which is usually a function of time - see chronoamperometry).
In a non-stirred solution, a diffusion-limited current is usually measured, which is proportional to the concentration of an electroactive analyte.
The integral of current with time is the electric charge, which may be related to the amount of substance reacted by Faraday’s laws of electrolysis.

🧵Apparently, voltammetry and amperometry are the same thing. According to IUPAC's Gold Book the definitions are basically the same (next skeet). The note about amperometry unhelpfully states that "A can be distinguished from v by the parameter being controlled and the parameter being measured" 🧪

My sister-in-law just had a new gas boiler installed after the old one broke down. This is still how so many apartments in Vienna are heated. Massive investments are needed to get away from the reliance on gas. We’re not seeing it. And FPÖ is of course against any ”green” reforms.
