A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue and Green are walking in the rain, and water is pouring down so hard that only their silhouettes are visible, raindrops bouncing off their umbrellas.
Green, singing: I'm singing in the rain, I'm singing in the rain, what a glorious feeling, I'm happy again
Blue: You're surprisingly cheery about this.
Green: It's finally autumn.

We’ve got SO MUCH accessibility stuff to get angry about But it wears you down so much constantly facing barriers, we feel broken. Even the tiny barriers build up Like I haven’t even shared the shitshow of our trip to Wembley a few weeks ago

New day, fresh cup of coffee, and… I’m not sure why I didn’t just `position-area: end span-start;`, but never mind. At least I got to learn about safe/unsafe positioning along the way—thanks Bramus!

(tl;dr: when using `justify-self` on a popover, Firefox seems to treat any values as ‘start’. I am perfectly willing to accept that I’m misunderstanding the spec somewhere…)

CSS friends! I’ve been messing around with anchor positioning and either I’m being a doofus or I’ve found a bug, and I need someone who actually knows what they’re doing to confirm which it is! Reduced test case: codepen.io/editor/jonpear… #help

Plus, of course, the joy of hanging out with other humans, discussing how we can make the web better for other humans. AI could never 💜 Thanks to all involved! See you next year? [2/2]

At Schiphol, headed home from two excellent days at #cssday. I’m tired, my feet ache, and my throat is a little more scratchy than I’d like; but I’m leaving with a full heart and head full of odd ideas for things i want to try out. [1/2]

OK, so masonry-type designs may be a little bit old-fashioned these days, but CSS grid lanes looks like it could be an awesome tool for making digital art #cssday

From the news this morning, it seems an apt time to note—once again—that a million seconds is 11½ days, a billion seconds is 31.7 years, and a trillion seconds is 31.7 _millennia_. Just in case certain news stories need putting into perspective right now…

Back at #cssday again. Excited to learn some cool new stuff in a totally safe space without any danger of flamethrowers at all. Apparently… (standard disclaimer applies: not unfriendly, just shy)

“…be […] the person in the room who isn’t tired yet. Because the one thing the business model of apathy cannot survive is a roomful of people who refuse to be tired on cue.” (not sure why I didn’t share this when it was released, but now is also good #prideMonth )

(I’m curious to see the turnout figures once the count is done; but I suspect that were apathy a candidate, they’d be significantly ahead of anyone else)

So apparently England has looked at what’s going on in the US and decided “yes, we want our country to be more like that”, and I can’t help suspecting Wales won’t be too far behind. Wonderful.

#voted (I’ll admit that I’m worried about the outcomes + effects of this election cycle, but… gotta do my bit, and so should you. However intolerable you may find the various parties, I guarantee apathy will be even worse. Go vote!)

Remote is massively preferred, but could probably make occasional on-site in S Wales/SW England/London work as well (please no AI or crypto. Also, if you’re the kind of person/company who uses ‘woke’ as a pejorative, or who might be offended by my listing my pronouns, you can—respectfully—jog on 💜)

For folk who’re interested in the inevitable list of tech: I have 20y+ experience with HTML, CSS, and Javascript, and have been writing Ruby for 15y. I’m pretty handy with SVGs, can wrangle databases, and while I’d never claim to be an expert at either UX or a11y, I try my best… […]

I’ve just realised that my 15 year self-employment anniversary managed to sneak by uncommented yesterday. I keep thinking that I should write about the whole thing at some point, but there’re so many folk who’ve written about it, I’m not sure what more I can add. [1/2]

(this is on top of all the other minor niggles about the ‘Music’ app that have been getting steadily worse over time because Apple doesn’t give a damn about software quality, but the prev/next thing is by far the most irritating because it happens ALL THE TIME)

Been using Apple Music a lot more after watching @jjbbllkk.bsky.social’s recent video about Spotify. Anyone know who I can harass at Apple so they actually fix the prev/next track functionality when using shuffle. Such a basic bit of UX that has been unusably broken for too long…

Creative folk who’ve ditched the Adobe stack: what’re your favourite Photoshop replacements? I’ve been trying to love the Affinity suite for about a year; Designer and Publisher are fine, but while Photo has some nice touches, I just… don’t love it. I’m curious as to what other folk are using.

Heading back home after three days cosplaying an extrovert at a trade show with/for a client. It’s been incredibly tiring but a lot of fun. Got a laundry list of things I/we want to do as a result, but first I need to lay down and not move for at least 12 hours.

… and, of course, it wouldn’t be a journey in a Voyager if I didn’t end up sitting in a luggage rack because TOCs in this country seem to be constantly surprised that folk actually use their services 🙄 (I’d mind less had I not paid £82 for the privilege)

Well, this one is in a better condition than the last one I was on; but it’s still badly in need of refurbishment… or better yet, scrapping and replacing with something that’s not horrendously cramped and, somehow, still stinks of toilets.
