This is further complicated because the history of science fiction has had a convoluted and uncomfortable relationship with fascism. As William Gibson points out, fascist ideology helped shape early science fiction.

I became aware of this when I read the novel The People in the Trees, which is a fictionalized version of this story. It was shocking to find out that the book was based on a true story.

This reminded me of Langdon Winner's famous essay "Do artifacts have politics" where he argues that all tech is inherently political. You can't divorce tech from the social/economic/political/etc. context that creates it. Not a foolproof argument, Winner has his critics, but he still has some merit

I used to get screeners easily whenever I covered festivals back in the day, but it was never the "big" movies. It was mostly the small indies that where happy to send screeners to just about anyone.
