📉 Tariffs are dominating the news, which is a good excuse to re-up this thorough piece from Anay Mridul of Green Queen Media on their possible effect on food tech and alt protein. TLDR (although I highly recommend you read it): It's not good. www.greenqueen.com.hk/trump-tariff...

Explained: How Trump's Tariffs Will Impact Food Tech & Alternative Protein
Food prices are skyrocketing in the US, and President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China will hit the alternative protein sector hard.

Shifting the protein they offer to more plants and less meat is a way for food retailers to hit emissions targets and give their customers a healthier choice. Rewe, Germany's second-biggest retailer, has committed to doing just that in a move that will help shape the food system across Europe.
A picture of legumes alongside the following text: Last week one of the country's biggest food retailers made an announcement which will shape food environments in Germany and beyond.

REWE Group announced its aspiration to set protein split targets across its European branches.

The LA fires provided another deluge of apocalyptic photos of the terrible destruction turbocharged by climate change. Madre Brava's @emilyarmistead.bsky.social picked out one which highlighted our inability (so far) to tackle the impact on the planet of what we eat.

Two stories today catch the eye: Record January temps and cultivated meat pet food. The potential of the latter to affect the former is huge. The UK's first cultivated meat dog treats produce far fewer emissions than raising and slaughtering animals. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Great piece here on plant-based defaults by Emily Chung at CBC: www.cbc.ca/news/science... It recognises that our food choices are already influenced by what we're offered as default options in restaurants, events, even hospitals, and asks what would happen if we played with those defaults.

Well this certainly stirred up a hornets nest. Besides the straw man arguments (Sri Lanka proves organic ag doesn't work 😂), I think the piece is based on a false premise: 'Factory farming is efficient'. It's not. The inefficiencies are externalised, that's all: www.nytimes.com/2024/12/13/o...
