#ResistanceRoots Dorothy Vaughan was born on this day in 1910 in Kansas City, Mo. She was a mathematician, human computer and computer programmer who became the first African American supervisor at NASA. Throughout her career, she fought for equal pay and advancements and promotions for women. /1
Dorothy Vaughan in 1971, the year she retired from NASA. Vaughan was a visionary pioneer for women in STEM and a foundational architect of the U.S. space program. She broke through the dual barriers of Jim Crow segregation and gender discrimination to alter the course of aerospace history. Her calculations and FORTRAN programming laid the groundwork for America’s early aerospace achievements. By becoming NACA’s first African American supervisor in 1949, Vaughan cracked open doors that had been firmly shut to women of color. She spent her tenure as Section Head fighting for equal pay, promotions and engineering assignments for both Black and white women across the agency. When electronic computers arrived, she taught herself FORTRAN and trained her staff, saving dozens of Black women from layoffs and transitioning them into high-tech careers. Vaughan stands today as a symbol of resilience, intellectual brilliance and the indispensable power of community.

Texas farmers need more options when the rain stops coming. Hemp can help farmers protect their soil and keep money coming in during drought. Let Texas farmers decide what makes sense for their land, not politicians or corporate monopolies.

Trusting the tech barons to build our water infrastructure is like trusting a fox to build a hen house. While we do have to fix our leaky pipes and become more efficient with our water, we need to beware of Wall Street being a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

America’s farmers are getting older. We need a new generation ready to keep our farms running and our country fed. Food security is national security, and the future of agriculture depends on whether young people can see a future in farming.

@courtneymilan.com I just pulled this from a post over on Facebook, felt like it might be info worth sharing...
From Laura Resnick:

"Absolutely furious right now.

The Anthropic settlement admin, in the huge AI copyright infringement case, is sending claimants information about claim disputes, disagreements or confusion over allocation of the settlement funds, etc.

Someone using the name "Stephen Edgington" is claiming 100% ownership and 100% of the settlement $ for more than 20 of my copyrighted books. I've never heard of this person, and I'm the sole copyright holder in every instance. So I have to upload my copyright documentation for every damn book to refute his fraudulent claim."From Laura Resnick (cont'd):

"I'm also writing to the settlement admin, with copyright evidence attached, to report "Stephen Edgington" for fraud and urge them to pursue this matter and hold that "claimant" accountable. I assume "he" is filing a 100% claim to the books of dozens (hundreds?) of writers in hopes of receiving Anthropic settlement money to which he has no right whatsoever, in instances where the actual copyright holders or their heirs have NOT filed a claim and so there is no one to challenge his fraud."

When a handful of corporations control our food supply, one mistake can ripple across multiple states. That's what happens when the Greedy Few build a food system that's too centralized to protect working families. We need to break up the monopolies and build stronger local food systems.
