This trick has been a real boon for quickly evaluating open-source code lately.
I’ve blocked claude on GitHub. I’m looking at a repo page and there’s a big yellow banner announcing claude has committed to this repo.

Apparently keeping them ~5 cm off the wall is good because, to put it simply, any more introduces progressively larger "pits" of volume loss at more and more important frequencies. The wall also boosts low frequencies though, which the rolloff switch compensates for. www.genelec.com/monitor-plac...

Close to finishing my new website, but a bit unsure about this layout. Love how the page remains spatially almost identical at all widths, thanks to the horizontally scrollable sections.
The same page at 4 different viewport widths. Header illustration made out of purple dancing columns, aligned with the page’s actual column grid.

Each section on the page is made out of columns, which are horizontally scrollable: columns simply go offscreen when there’s not enough space. Page height remains roughly the same at all viewport widths.

I had Apple Intelligence turned off before updating to iOS 27. It’s now force-enabled and there’s no longer 1 checkbox to untick but 10, sprinkled across the OS. It’s also eaten up 20 GB storage. support.apple.com/guide/iphone... Think Different indeed.

After a burst of inspiration from some sweet print design (apwot.com), I think I'll give horizontal layouts another go. This is my old site from 13 (oh god) years ago. I always liked it, but browser bugs and lack of scroll-snap made it too clunky. Should be able to pull off a better version now.

Had to get a new desktop and couldn't bear another piece of Ikea cardboard. Ended up spending too much effort on a slab of oak. Sandpapered by hand so it's all inconsistent, but was a lot of fun: could use little bits I'd learned in 3D graphics to figure out the rounding.

I wish I could like and repost newsletters. 🖤 @blackdragonpress.co.uk
Snippet of newsletter from Black Dragon Press:

I think by now it has become a well-established truth that Al generated art is fucking awful. Not only does it steal the work of human artists, it's also terrible for the environment and is part of one of the largest transfers of wealth from the many to the tew in human history. Also, it's just really fucking ugly.
Which is why I believe traditional illustrators, painters and graphic designers will ultimately prevail, and even prosper, as you just cannot program human ingenuity, humour and experiences. You cannot create original work by re-hashing.
One only feels for all of the entry-level illustrators facing the tsunami of Al shit currently flooding us via shitty event flyers, posters, book covers, wedding invites etc etc etc. If that's you, stick in there, you can do it!
Anyways, enough of that.

Ok, I'm done with the game. The ending was a bit weird. Still one of the greatest games, and I loved it. Here's one final blast of nice screenshots, as spoiler-free as possible.
Boy walking along a narrow tunnel, hand leaning on the wall. Very dark blue and purple. Trickle of water leading towards more light ahead.Sky full of long streaks of some kind, like god rays. Tall tower lit by evening sun.Boy standing on ruins edge looking towards more tall ruins in the distance: various plateaus, things carved into cliff faces, one building still standing, and a huge surrounding cliff in the distance.Boy and creature standing on bit of ruins taken over by lush plants. Neat custom lighting trick: if the boy is directly between the camera and a strong light source, he turns into a black silhouette. Looks incredible at times, and works as an eerie callback to the previous games.
Boy standing in front of sunset disappearing behind a very tall cliff face. His head is full on black, but the black fades downwards, so the bottom of his tunic is just rather a warm and dim shadow with a thin but strong rim light.Boy coming from dark passage onto an evening-suntouched balcony. He is completely black, darker than the passage.Competely black-silhouetted boy looking back towards the camera, from up close. The Last Guardian doesn't exactly run perfectly all the time, but it's a small price to pay for a world like this. These seem to all be real geometry. Very 3D, and not exactly low-poly. Even the skybox-looking cliff in the far horizon seemed real when I got close. Such strong presence.
Looking down between megastructure-like ruins of massive buildings, bottoms fading into fogLooking down at a kind of megascaffolding, also disappearing into fogStanding in front of huge temple-like complex ruin, horizon covered by very distant and massive cliffLooking up at a very tall and intricate cave wall, some torches show scaffolding and platforms carved into it, freestanding stone pillars in front

For those who don't know: this is The Last Guardian, sequel to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. People said bad things about it on release, so many including me never played it. Shouldn't have listened. I started a few days ago and it's already my favourite out of the three.

Addicted to The Last Guardian. Love my catbirdgoat friend. What a stupendously good game. The camera though… almost as bad as in Ico. Gives my wife motion sickness from just watching, which is a huge bummer. Games need to pay more attention to camera accessibility.

Catching up on some classics I've never played this summer. Just finished Ico. A masterclass in letting and enabling the player figure out what to do. Terrible camera. And wonderfully intimate core mechanics, which I'm surprised to not have seen used as strongly since then.

Oh cool, adding a weight axis took like 10 minutes. The grid kind of made it obvious how the shape should embolden: up from the baseline and down from the x-height line, but always sliding along the hex grid.

No idea what I'm doing but the overall shape of this glyph feels pretty neat. Maybe there's something there if I can just redraw it with curves. "Now draw the rest of the owl" vibes….
Some kind of wonky runic “n”, with a hex grid overlay: it follows the grid, sharp corners and all

Joni Korpi @jonikorpi.com · 06/07/2026
Neat thing I didn't know about fonts: they use integers! Each glyph in Fontra uses a 1000x1000 canvas by default, but you can change it. At ~16x16 it feels like a fun little puzzle. Low-poly modelling with integer positions, but the vertices are actually cubic spline control points.

Joni Korpi @jonikorpi.com · 05/07/2026
But I don't want to make a literal pixel font, so I'm going to treat the pixels more like a grid and apply techniques from procedural terrain generation. Things like: dual grid tiles (image from @oskarstalberg.bsky.social), tile deformation, hex grid variant for italics, and so on. Should be fun.
Dual grid on square and hex grids. Shows you need very few tile variants to account for every possible combination of adjacent tiles.

Another one of those things traditional artists solved ages ago: just make the night out of cold hues instead of black. They don't have to be dark, and not necessarily even desaturated if you oversaturate the light. Outlines and/or rim lights help a lot too.

The sans version of Avona is also more fun with radial repetition. Could actually use some of these as icons…. /cc @arcanetype.com
Hexagonal icons made by radially repeating glyphs from Avona 6 times. W/w/V/v look like stars, j/i/l/1/h look vaguely arabic, C looks like wind or waves, 7 looks like a wheel made out of legs, # and * look icy, quote marks look scorching, and comma looks like a James Bond spiral.

Joni Korpi @jonikorpi.com · 01/07/2026
Doodling branding some more before running off to summer vacation, I remembered I also have a license to an unfinished sans version of Avona. More of a display font than the serif, so it can make a logo that pulls more attention. This layout could be fun if I smooth out the touching bits?
The sans version is swashier, less rectangular. Trying out a staggered layout where the bottom of the last “l” in “Will” connects to the top of the “W” in “Wilds”.

Joni Korpi @jonikorpi.com · 27/06/2026
The lowercase "w" happens to tile really well into a hexagon shape. Looks a bit like roots growing underground. Also runic and mild horror vibes? The "o" as the eye doesn't quite fit here, but shows this could be turned into an Eye of Sauron type of thing.
Hex grid of tiles made out of radially repeating “w” glyphs from Avona Serif. There’s a lowercase “o” glyph inside the middlemost one: looks kind of like an eye or a ring.
