I know I’m late to this, but this show in the west end is as incredible as I’d heard many people say

It was such a balmy evening working overnight that I went for a long walk at around 3 to take in the sights and sounds of nighttime city life. It was fascinating to see all the folk helping to keep London’s overnight economy going.

We went for a wonderful cool off at Charlton lido last night. It feels a shame this sort of project isn’t really built any more. I wonder if some tech billionaire would like to gain some social credit by creating one - perhaps in Peckham Rye Park?!

I just boarded a wonderfully air conditioned 185 electric bus, but someone had opened the windows which meant the cooled air was being pumped into the world outside, and hot air was pouring in! I closed the windows I could reach and it made a huge difference.

I’m so sad to hear about David Hockney’s death. He was truly one of the greats! I’m posting this as a small tribute to him - remembering my first experience of his work, when I was tiny. My sister @kimmannesabbott.bsky.social had created his name in his artistic style for her foundation art year.

Our stick blender’s motor recently died and we bought a new one. The old attachments sat in a cupboard gathering dust. I decided to list them on eBay. eBay’s ai works out what the item is and estimates a value. I’ve now sold three attachments and made £28. I was just going to throw those things out!

It’s only taken us 12 years, but we have finally unpacked the last of our boxes shipped back from our time in the UAE - four boxes of books tucked away in the loft! Arrietty was sad to lose her impromptu cat tree when we finally sorted them. The contents we didn’t dispose of are now shelved.

OVERCOMING DIFFICULTIES
Tolerance is very important. If you have tolerance, you can easily overcome difficulties. If you have little tolerance or are without it, then the smallest thing immediately irritates you.

A treat for anyone who’s never seen the lovely Whitechapel Elizabeth Line platform art by Chantal Joffe that Stephen is referring to here.
A collage by Chantal JoffeA close up of a metal collage by Chantal JoffeA Sunday Afternoon in Whitechapel
Chantal Joffe
The artwork spanning the platforms of the Elizabeth line station at Whitechapel seeks to reflect the local east London neighbourhood. The artist made the work as an evocation of Sunday afternoons spent in the area.
The works were initially made as small-scale paper collages that were subsequently rendered in laser-cut aluminium.
Commissioned in 2017 as part of The Crossrail Art Foundation's public art programme for the Elizabeth line with the support of the Whitechapel Gallery.

My first story of the day is a bit cheerier than the usual doom and gloom: Plans have been unveiled for a new Beatles-themed visitor attraction in central London. The building where the band made their final public performance on a rooftop in January 1969 is set to open to the public next year.

You don’t see many of these Waymo self driving cabs in London yet, but they are popping up more frequently, and sparked Paul’s comment about his kids looking after him, as he’s worried they will take his job. 😥

‪Here’s one of my favourite family breakfast recipes. We always called them Barney Bannocks, though I think they may have been intended to be called Barley Bannocks - despite the key ingredient being oatmeal. Delicious with sweet and savoury toppings, especially marmite..! Recipe in 2nd pic alt text
Barney bannocks on a griddle panBarney Bannocks
5oz self raising flour
5oz Oatmeal
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp salt
1 oz unsalted butter
Milk to mix (appx 100ml)

Heat griddle medium high

Mix dry ingredients
Rub in butter to form breadcrumb texture
Add milk and stir to form a smooth dough
Knead 30 seconds

Roll out to 3/4 inch circle and cut into eight wedges

Cook one side then the other til mid brown, then cook the three triangular edges in turnA Barney bannock with toppings

I bumped into a colleague who was on the way to the British Museum yesterday, to visit the Samurai exhibition, which closes on Monday. I went today. It was absolutely brilliant. Go if you have the time! Always lovely to pay a quick visit to the Parthenon gallery and see the Rosetta Stone as well.

Just watched the C4 2026 revival of Chris Evans’s TFI franchise. I thought it was pretty good. It keeps some fun bits while binning those that really don’t deserve an airing in the modern day. Lovely vintage interview with Bowie, old music clips and two great live covers by tonight’s guests.
