My most direct answer to your actual question is look at the museums in SJ, go to San Pedro Square, I can't say enough nice things about the history park and gardens there.

And of course, you can always drive up to SF, which we do a lot for concerts.

If you want concerts, it's lacking. A few small clubs and large venues. Nothing in the 200-2K people range. However, Santa Cruz is a relatively easy drive as well, and it's a fun place on its own -- boardwalk, etc.

Santana Row in SJ is a Small Walkable Neighborhood with restaurants, nightlife, shopping, etc. It is intentionally an homage to La Rambla in Barcelona.

There are wineries around. San Pedro Square is a local analogue of a hawkers market. There are a number of nice gardens and parks in environs, like Hakone Gardens in Saratoga.

If you are in SJ city and don't want to go far, there's some nice museums downtown (e.g. Tech Museum), along with the History Park and Japanese Friendship Gardens. I highly recommend the latter, they even have a train/tram museum there.

I am sometimes exasperated when someone explains to me that they are dead, for reasons similar to that. A couple of times, yes I know they are dead, but I wasn’t thinking about it when I was typing, I was thinking about them.

I wish all my dead friends happy birthday. It makes me smile, that I think about them.

It could be worse than having the mascot be a turtle; up 95 a bit they are the sad chickens.

Though, many of us from there intentionally mispronounce “Terp” as “Twerp” and you are welcome to.

No problem. I feel a little bad being pedantic about it. The whole story is about getting details right, and some magat might play gotcha there.

Too late. I had thousands of dollars of Sonos. In every room. My remaining Sonos speaker (“remaining” because they bricked the others) I just use with Bluetooth because it works with advanced audio concepts like “pause” and “resume.” The Airplay2 to my Denon is better than the other Sonos what’s it.

Disincentivizing widely-used online services from offering strong encryption. During a war with Iran. A country that's been conducting cyber operations against U.S. targets for years. That's what both parties think belongs in the NATIONAL DEFENSE BILL.

There's another effort to break encryption in the US Senate! The STOP CSAM Act was added to the current version of the annual defense spending bill, known as the NDAA. If passed, it could require Internet infrastructure services and online platforms to break encryption to scan all data.

Just flagging. What in your opinion is the proper way to deal with this? Is it not a violation of the most sacred duty an officer of the court and country might do?

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.

I think it is that. It is sometimes still rocky. I bitched the other week about a clunky experience that was (I think) a system that wanted 2FA, so it unexpectedly asked me for a password after my passkey. We are still waiting for the transition to passkey-1FA.

Sounds good, but that doesn’t really exist. The point of Brooks Law is that people must get up to speed and they’re a drain on resources for a while. What happens when the person donated is a great person but a bad hire? People are not interchangeable parts that can be dropped in.

My assessment is that it is more associated with being a parent. It matches my observations of the world. Now it is hardly casual and lightly correlated, and maybe even just an observational effect.

I have to disagree with your premise, even as I agree with your conclusion. But folk theories are like that. They are dioramas. When I was a child, my parents (born in the 30s) told this to me “oh, you will be more conservative when you get older) as a truism.

I think I would take the opposite bet, that they wouldn’t be fired even after that. The guiding principle of this administration is that the buck stops somewhere else. People in charge give orders and take credit. People below get consequences.
