Having just seen Digger, I think it's a failure of a movie. But Tom Cruise does a hell of a job acting in it. You can see why he wanted to do the movie and hoped it would give him a shot at an Oscar.

Yes, and it's appropriate. Congress is the Article I branch. The Constitution gives it power over the Supreme Court. Not the other way around.

The rule of thumb for measles is one death per thousand cases. Since there have been five deaths there are more likely thousands and thousands of cases.

That's true, but it won't change the outcome of the election. But believing it and then despairing so much that you don't vote will.

You may be surprised to learn how little excessive spending helps. You need money for a campaign, but beyond a certain point money has little impact, for example Musk spent $25 million Jon the Wisconsin supreme court race and lost.

Every Democrat I know is like, "they'll probably shoot at me but I'm voting anyway" while Republicans I've talked to are like, "what's the use in voting, all the politicians are corrupt." So I think we'll do fine.

Samuel Johnson once said that “mutual cowardice keeps us in peace. Were one-half of mankind brave, and one-half cowards, the brave would be always beating the cowards. Were all brave, they would lead a very uneasy life; all would be continually fighting: but being all cowards, we go on very well.”

I read them at a similar age. Paper-thin characters. I felt accomplished for having worked my way through those long books. I don't particularly like the show. Like a lot of prestige television it is slow and over-produced. Jared Harris is pretty good, and some of the writing is interesting.

Driving across Pennsylvania (the Turnpike) in an electric car with not great range (2023 Chevy Bolt EV) is like traveling with a dog or small child. You have to plan ahead where you're going to stop and charge. But the Turnpike has chargers every few rest stops, so it's not a big deal.

We're staying in a Victorian b&b in Beaver. PA, and I cannot figure the town out. There are tons of well-kept shops, clean wide streets and sidewalks, numerous amenities, etc. Millions of dollars in investment and maintenance and there's no way the population here could support this economy.

Realistically the possibility of an agent of the Trump regime showing up at any one of the almost 100,000 polling places in our country is very slight. It's important to fight against this without amplifying fear, which ends up doing Trump's work for him.

The networks banning coverage of Trump becoming seeing but not hearing him works well for me. I've never had a problem seeing him standing around, a goofy looking old billionaire. It's hearing him that I can't stand. So after the ban is over, could we please bring back the cameras but not the mikes?

i think the best "electability" argument isnt race, gender or resume. its the person who attracts the most dedicated, genuine, organic support. sometimes that has been barack obama. sometimes it was donald trump. but thats the real electability.

It certainly shows disrespect and possibly criminality towards voting, the basis of democracy. But 1,000 election monitors are far too few to have any impact at the national level.

Authoritarians rule by fear more than by real force. Amplifying the fear of Trump is doing his work for him. Sure, we should prepare for election interference, and states have been doing that, with great success. But don't let fear keep you from acting. Mail-in ballots and polling places are safe.

I find CVS's pricing of common items like toothpaste to be a real barrier to buying anything. It's so confusing how much something costs—some things are packaged two in one box, others buy one get one 50% off, there are various sizes etc—that it's impossible to know if you're getting ripped off.
