Jono: "That's the open source mindset. You decide what to work on. You decide when. Nobody is keeping score, nobody is checking in, nobody is assigning you work. The only thing driving you is wanting to make the project better." People do things because they care. 🤍

code and tests aren't the moat. they never were. no need for agents to copy a project. forking was always an option. the moat of an oss project is its community, its governance, and its ecosystem connections. agents will never be able to replicate that. don't hide. let's build in the open, together

A reminder of one of the loveliest pairs of siblings in the dictionary: ‘muscle’ and ‘mouse’. To the Roman imagination, the flexed biceps of a (typically naked) athlete resembled a rodent scuttling under the skin. ‘Musculus’, in Latin, means ‘little mouse’.

Thought I'd talk a bit about npmx likes and how they work. - They are on atproto - The source of truth is from constellation 🌌. We get the total distinct did count, and if you have liked it - Likes are cached server side for 5 mins. - Uses the package url as the key to the record.

If you’re curious how they nerd sniped me into joining npmx to help, it was this. Lots of interesting questions of how can you integrate atproto beyond things like bluesky comments on a website if the application is not inherently atproto? Hoping we can find some good answers to these questions.

when you collaborate in open source teams, you need to unlearn a lot of what your company work taught you
a screenshot from the #contributing channel in a new project discord server. patak says:

@Emanuele you can choose by the way, commenting is good, and start doing an issue directly also works.
If two people work on the same issue at the same time, for OSS is actually a good thing. It is different than when you are working on a company and would like to maximize output. Here, if you start implementing something, and someone beats you to it and sends a PR, the knowledge you gained while trying is very valuable. You can help review the PR and make the implementation better in that way. Maintainers can even add you as co-author.

And both of you will then have more experience on that part of the codebase, that is great for later.

you can also think that there are now 30+ devs checking and working on the repo
so if you want to coordinate that in a fine-grained way, you introduce a lot of bottlenecks
it is more efficient to just let everyone do what they feel is more important and help each other when they collapse
and you'll be surprised by how little collapse ends up happening, because there is a lot of side comms here too that arranges things naturally

Will people have time maintaining forks of multiple open source projects? Just imagining the security burden makes me shudder. We can't slap AI on there and assume that we're done. Even if it reduces the effort. It's still more effort than having someone else maintain the project.
