I first had the impulse to summarise, to compile, and to connect the dots in this teaching almost 2 decades ago. It is a lot of work, so I had to ask myself: why? Why go through this challenge?

Blog Post >> On purpose
The core of these teachings are either from the late 19th century or the first half of the 20th century. Why bother revisiting them now? What is the purpose behind this effort?

Dignity relates to effort. To "doing our best". It is totally fine if someone "doesn't care about doing their best", but I do. My challenge is that I end up falling short of it, more frequently than I would like. jonathansoifer.com/ive-done-my-...

I've done my best - Jonathan Soifer
There is something indescribable about being able to say "I've done my best". A kind of satisfaction that is independent from outcomes.

The hardest battles I've ever fought were between my values and my actions. Call it cognitive dissonance or hypocrisy, rest assurred I got back what I deserved. Some lessons were particularly painful yet I am grateful for each one of them.

Discipline is the center of my "keyword cloud" for 2025 With all the synonyms or otherwise closely associated words floating around it Focus. Constancy of aim and effort. Determination. Perseverance. Moderation. Consistency. Persisting. Enduring. Patience. And finally: success

Life is just so interesting... every field of human knowledge - from Math to Psychology - offers a different light under which we can interpret the world and there are so many angles, so many perspectives, and dimensions and so many opportunities to make a positive difference It's mind boggling

I am not an expert and I have no idea what your budget is but broadly speaking there are a number of devices out there that either measure or influence humidity. In my case, I got a humidifier that also has a panel showing the current humidity in the room... Back in Brazil I needed a de-humifier 😅

I wonder how many people were pushed far away from spirituality due to exposure to toxic people in the field It is a challenge of communication: when all you have seen of spirituality is unhealthy or even toxic, it's just as natural to label the whole thing as snake oil I don't see an easy way out

My latest cartoon for New Scientist
Caption: Earth, Air, Fire and Water wait excitedly to see how they'll fit into Dmitri Mendeleev's table of elements

Image: Dmitri is drawing the table on a chalkboard. Behind him, the four classical elements watch happily. Water says "Look! He's adding a eighth column. That must be for us!".

It is still curious to see the online battle between "people that do therapy" and the "hustle culture" team. Hustling could use some therapy. and Patients could be a bit less patient. 6 / 6

The balance and integration between these two express itself as a positive impact in our own life and in those around us. It's transformational. In a healthy way. When we understand enough of a situation and then act appropriately, some form of success is inevitable! 5 / n

On the other hand, many of us are too quick to act. Making uninformed decisios and haphazardly taking action. Consequences are really not thought through. It is easy to observe the impact of this carelessness daily. "If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable" 4 / n

Those with excessive tendencies towards "perception" will likely make the mistake of over thinking. "Analysis paralysis" comes to mind Reading too many books, decades of therapy, talking about problems but not taking action Master Choa calls this "sterile intelligence" - too much philosophy 3 / n

In Arhatic Yoga, this virtue is called "Accurate Perception and Correct Expression" One is about proper observation and interpretation. The other one is about acting accordingly. It is somewhat inevitable that most of us do not have a perfect balance between the two 2 / n

There is some level of polarisation between the fans of "understanding" and the fans of "getting things done" It's the age old dichotomy between "book smarts" and "street smarts" (not exactly but in some ways) As usual, there needs to be some balance or even integration between these two... 1 / n

Despite many times failing 😅, I evaluate my life with these metrics: • How much am I doing for my community and those in need? • Am I investing in my future? • Could I use my time in a way that is more meaningful to me? I am blessed with some level of freedom, I might as well use it! 11 / 11

⚡️ Energy (to get things done) ⏰ Time 💰 Money are resources... some of us have some "excess" of either one of them, or of all of them. Consciously making a decision on how to distribute these resources between: • present and future • ourself and others is inherently a spiritual decision 10 / n

Dedicating some of these resources to myself right now is healthy Setting aside and investing some of these resources for my future me is healthy Sharing some of them with my family and loved ones is healthy Distributing some of them to a larger community and those in need is also healthy 9 / n

Once all of that is said and done, some of us will have a "negative balance" (we needed more hours in the day) If that's your case, this message likely doesn't apply to you 🩷 In my case, after being done with all these things, I still have a good couple of hours left -it's a form of freedom 7 / n

I wouldn't dare tell anyone how to live their life but I feel comfortable sharing the way I reason about mine. We all have these "blockers" of responsibilities and activities that we can't avoid: like sleeping, commuting, working, eating, etc. Yes, it varies a lot from person to person 6 / n

Jonathan Soifer @jonathansoifer.com · 10/09/2024
As shown above, the concept of "we all get the same 24 hours" is not really true from a practical level but it can still hold valuable insights from a spiritual angle. Why? I am glad you asked! It reminds us of the "cycle of 24 hours" and the importance of spiritual resource management. 5 / n

Jonathan Soifer @jonathansoifer.com · 10/09/2024
Just as a last example of how the 24 hours of a day is not the same for everyone: If you cook meals yourself, you know that grocery shopping and meal preparation takes up a significant amount of time If you can afford to order take out, delivery, or if you have a maid, it's a different game 4 / n
100
Jonathan Soifer @jonathansoifer.com · 10/09/2024
And that's not the only kind of impact on our availability. If you can afford to live close to work, your commute time might be as little as 15 min. For some people, commute time is a daily effort that takes 1, 2 or 3h per day. Working fully remotely - like I do, makes a huge difference! 3 / n
100
Jonathan Soifer @jonathansoifer.com · 10/09/2024
The concept is problematic because we each have different commitments. For those of you that are primary caretakers for other human beings, you know very well that your 24 hours are not really yours. Raising your kids or caring for a loved one living with disabilities takes time: hours. 2 / n

Jonathan Soifer @jonathansoifer.com · 10/09/2024
I don't like the concept that "we all have 24 hours". From a pragmatic angle, it just isn't true. From a spiritual angle though, it can be a helpful concept. I will first make it clear why it is problematic and inaccurate, then I will make a point as to why this concept can be helpful. 1 / n

The answer to me is: relationships I've struggled for a long time to understand the place of "family" in my life – and also to relate to "community" Finding friends that truly resonate with our own values, principles, and maturity seems to be a shared challenge for many people 3 / n

It is a case of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" - not only beauty but spirituality as well And these paths and different opinions meet when we realise that everything and everyone is holy, sacred, beautiful, and spiritual 5 / n

Master Choa Kok Sui once mentioned that "for some people their work is their yoga" - to me, yet another example of it Wondering where all these paths meet, it seems unavoidable that eventually we will realise that "valuable" or not, "sacred" or not, "holy" or not is a subjective definition 4 / n

For some, their religious practices and spirituality are the same. For others, these are two completely different topics that, at most, support each other. For some, alone time is sacred. Others will consider the place, the experiences and the time spent with friends as holy. 3 / n

Just as our own definition of love depends on our experiences, our awareness, and the way we interpret what happens to us... spirituality also has a dynamic definition. This dynamicism includes the connection to what we might call holy or sacred - and I think it is beautiful. 2 / n

Semantically speaking, Spiritually feels like "love" to me. It's one of those words that will have different meanings to different people. My spirituality is not your spirituality, my spirituality today is not my spirituality from yesterday. 1 / n
