The flip side of this coin, as laid out by Lonergan in a late-1950s lecture:
"A religious background, for one example, is a great help in bringing one's Welt into harmony with the universe of being. It enables one to accept a reality that is not seen or felt—immortality, soul, God, and so on-giving reality to what otherwise would not be 'real for me.' But while it confers an inestimable aid in the process of development, it can in the concrete work out as a hindrance: namely, if religion does not keep pace with other development. Thus, the faith of a child requires development into the theology of an adult. If development remains childish—on the level of 'Sister told me'—this can be dangerous in the life of the cultured adult, who will decide, not only that such faith is outmoded, but also that religion itself is childish. At best, religion will cease to have much influence in adult life. History gives us material to ponder in this connection: The church in Europe lost the workers in the nineteenth century; but would the church have lost the workers in the nineteenth century if she had not lost the intellectuals in the eighteenth?"
Bernard Lonergan, Understanding and Being: The Halifax Lectures on Insight, p. 183-4.

Last thing on Condon/The Pillar take re: Pecknold/DHS: the below starts out reasonably enough with a middle way in which Pecknold gives up his “missio canonica” but remaining on civil degree programs. But the idea he could then recover it after his leave to support *this* DHS is preposterous
But, as a devoted Catholic U. alum, l'd urge an amicable, quiet rethink of the dangling missio canonica in this story by the professor and the university, just to ensure it never becomes the story. If you see what I mean.
Especially since, for example, the professor volunteering himself to hand back the missio for the duration of his time in government service, to be reissued upon its completion, wouldn't have any impact on his tenure in the meantime.

e.g.
At some point, all Catholics who go into public service, especially in public facing roles, have to lend their voices and efforts to policies and causes about which there is at least room for prudential judgment and disagreement as far as the Church is concerned.
I am not sure that reality sits well with continuing to possess the canonical mission to teach faith and morals in the name of the Church. At a minimum, it seems like a recipe for avoidable confusion and the impossible attempt to serve two masters at once.
At worst, it could become an occasion of conflict and scandal.

Condon is also able to provide more details regarding Cardinal McElroy’s past views on US immigration policy/enforcement than I was able to bring to my piece.
That having been said, last year McElroy described the administration's immigration policy as "a comprehensive governmental assault designed to produce fear and terror among millions of men and women who have through their presence in our nation been nurturing precisely the religious, cultural, communitarian and familial bonds that are most frayed and most valuable at this moment in our country's history."
Earlier this year, the cardinal co-signed a statement in response to ICE enforcement actions in Minneapolis, saying that "we are witnessing a grave departure from our nation's deepest moral commitments and from the values of human dignity, restraint, and accountability that our faith traditions uphold. When the power of the state is exercised without regard for life, justice, or the common good, the foundations of democracy itself are put at risk."
This being the case, the cardinal apparently considers government immigration enforcement to be a matter of truth and morals, if not necessarily a matter of faith in the academic sense. So, while the chances of McElroy deciding to make Prof. Pecknold personally the locus of some future standoff between the Church…

Lonergan, *Method in Theology*, 330
Now, however, our interest is not in dialectic as affecting theological opinions but in dialectic as affecting community, action, situation. It affects community for, just as common meaning is constitutive of community, so dialectic divides community into radically opposed groups. It affects action for, just as conversion leads to intelligent, reasonable, responsible action, so dialectic adds division, conflict, oppression. It affects the situation, for situations are the cumulative product of previous actions, and when previous actions have been guided by the light and darkness of dialectic, the resulting situation is not some intelligible whole but rather a set of misshapen, poorly proportioned, and incoherent fragments.8 Finally, the divided community, their conflicting actions, and the messy situation are headed for disaster. For the messy situation is diagnosed differently by the divided community; action is ever more at cross-purposes; and the situation becomes still messier to provoke still sharper differences in diagnosis and policy, more radical criticism of one another’s actions, and an ever deeper crisis in the situation.

Pecknold talked a lot of shit about the quality of the argumentation in the USCCB's amicus in the birthright citizenship case, but then managed to both A) assert certitude in the absence of evidence and B) drop two eye-popping non sequiturs in a row: americanmind.org/salvo/birthr...
- It seeks to show that restricting birthright citizenship would be “unconstitutional,” yet by making such a logical mess of that argument, it shows that the government’s textualist interpretation of the 14th Amendment should be considered within constitutional bounds.

- Similarly, by making such a moral muddle of the claim that any restriction or denial of birthright citizenship is “immoral,” constituting an affront to human dignity, Matthew Martens ironically and unintentionally proves that there is no natural right to birthright citizenship at all.

From Lonergan’s “Moral Theology & the Human Sciences”
A second but allied suggestion is a distinction between external and internal criticism. The external critic draws, not on the science he is criticizing but on some distinct source. So the obligation to pay a family wage may be concluded from evident moral principles. But the de tacto operative economic theory may be that of a market economy, so that any employer that does pay a family wage sooner or later goes bankrupt because his wicked competitors do not pay a family wage. The de facto result is that a family wage is not paid and, indeed, cannot be paid until a modification of the market economy is brought about either by recurrent legislation on minimum wages or by a more radical criticism of the market economy itself.

This obviously raises questions for the present moment: What is intellectual excellence for us? What is our definition of intellectual virtue generically, and what specific intellectual virtues should be cultivated for their own sake?

For the weekend crowd, my latest in @commonwealmagazine.org: www.commonwealmagazine.org/conquering-d...
Death at the end of a long life still mystifies, but when it cuts a life short, sometimes one barely lived at all, it is a shard of inexplicability in our hearts. The person of faith insists that the bleak darkness of such loss is submerged in a deeper but somehow superluminous darkness of divine love. Or, to put it another way, when we wonder why death takes a life too soon, we bring forth a more wondrous puzzle: Why are there lives to be taken at all? The Christian answer to this puzzle is, at one level, merely heuristic: fundamentally, we owe our lives to the wisdom of God-whatever that turns out to be.

Each year from September 1 to October 4, the Christian family unites for this worldwide celebration of prayer and action to protect our common home. It is a special season where we celebrate God as Creator, and acknowledge Creation as the divine continuing act that summons us as collaborators to love and care for the gift of all that is created. As followers of Christ from around the globe, we share a common call to care for Creation. We are co-creatures and part of all that God has made. Our well-being is interwoven with the well-being of the Earth.

My latest in @commonwealmagazine.org: www.commonwealmagazine.org/conquering-d...
Beneath the blankets in our Milwaukee bedroom, my wife was consumed again with tearful anxiety over the fragility of our firstborn. A couple of years before, in Boston, a teacher recognized me as the type who “prays with his metaphysics.” So, I began to rehearse to Annie the logical implications of calling God our creator. What God makes, God loves, and what God loves, God knows. Further, God makes, loves, and knows eternally, without beginning or end. This making-loving-knowing does not pass into an infinite past nor emerge into an infinite future. All of God’s making-loving-knowing is a single, perfect, living, and luminous act. Nothing loved or known in and by this act is or can ever be lost.

Mejia said some of the children don't have families to go home to, and others' families are themselves involved in criminal
organizations, complicating the process of determining what would be safest for those children.
Arvey from Human Rights First said that some families are able to get their children as far north as Monterrey on flights, but then the children have to figure out the rest of the journey to Tamaulipas, the border state where many are from. She said cartels have even paid for some children's flights in order to re-recruit them.
"Now this is just making the security situation worse," Arvey said. "It's also making it more likely they'll be re-recruited instead of reunited with family and accessing services like with DHIA."

One of my favorite passages in Lonergan's *Insight*, in which he trashes behaviorism as insufficiently empirical:
Secondly, as there are sciences of nature, so also there is a science of man. As the sciences of nature are empirical, so also the science of man is empirical; for science is the resultant of an accumulation of related insights, and scientific insights grasp ideas that are immanent not in what is imagined but in what is given. If the sciences of nature can be led astray by the blunder that the objective is, not the verified, but the 'out there,' so also can the human sciences; but while this blunder in physics yields no more than the ineptitude of Galileo's primary qualities and Newton's true motion, it leads zealous practitioners of scientific method in the human field to rule out of court a major portion of the data and so deny the empirical principle. Durkheimian sociology and behaviorist psychology may have excuses for barring the data of consciousness, for there exist notable difficulties in determining such data; but the business of the scientist is not to allege difficulties as excuses but to overcome them, and neither objectivity in the sense of verification nor the principle of empiricism can be advanced as reasons for ignoring the data of consciousness.
