Some excellent value food and drink here in Venice’s Santa Marta district today. First pic shows the bargain €5 Spritz & snack deal at Carovansara, and second pic is at Osteria Bakan: €15 lunch, including primo, secondo, coffee, and wine/Spritz. Very local for us: that’s our bedroom window opposite!

Yes, in August it’s well worth staying a bit on the periphery! Rehearsals start soon for this project: I’m sackbutting, and Philippa is singing, with lots of old friends & colleagues involved.

Second evening in Venice, so two spritzes down so far. This evening at Carovansara, conveniently just round the corner from our apartment (thanks to @davidhewson.com for the rec); yesterday at Bar Blu (@robinsaikia.bsky.social’s little guidebook).

Thanks for the recipe! Had this tonight, over some thinner noodles, and with minced pork, because that’s what was in the freezer… (pork & aubergine a classic combo, of course).

#NowPlaying This is Very Good! Superb orchestral playing, and a marvellously clear but warm recorded sound. Honeck’s interpretation is often quite interventionist but never for the sake of it; details of articulation and dynamics are minutely observed.

On TGV heading north, near Dijon. Snowy fields, and Johannes Martin Kränzle’s powerful new Winterreise streaming through my earbuds. I saw his marvellous Alberich in the Berlin Ring, 2024; he recorded this Winterreise later that year.

 ABOUT

 The Oxen
 BY THOMAS HARDY

Christmas Eve, and twelve of the clock.
"Now they are all on their knees,"
An elder said as we sat in a flock
By the embers in hearthside ease.
We pictured the meek mild creatures where
They dwelt in their strawy pen,
Nor did it occur to one of us there
To doubt they were kneeling then.
So fair a fancy few would weave
In these years! Yet, I feel,
If someone said on Christmas Eve,
 "Come; see the oxen kneel,
"In the lonely barton by yonder coomb
 Our childhood used to know,"
I should go with him in the gloom,
 Hoping it might be so.

Plenty of @pgjonesvenice.bsky.social holiday reading here in our Venice Airbnb - though I've already read these ones… So instead, I've got @davidhewson.com's first Arnold Clover on my kindle -and am about to head over to Danilo with an empty water bottle to stock up for the weekend.
A fine selection of PGJ's Nathan Sutherland mysteries.

Super: going on my list for our week there (arriving 29th, probably after you've gone). When we stayed in Santa M, in a rainy 2018, the eating places around there weren’t as interesting. View from our window (yours, too?!)

Coincidentally, I was reading a review by @jonathandnunn.bsky.social this morning, which waxed lyrical about the dish, as cooked by Hugh Corcoran at Yellow Bittern
It's a shame, because all this white noise distracts from the fact Corcoran is clearly a
talented chef whose best cooking has the élan and nerve of a panenka. Putting a dish
on the menu as rooted in thrift as Dublin coddle could easily backfire, but it's superb:
two boiled white sausages in a luminous broth with a single, spectacularly dense,
spoonable potato, turned golden from the leaching of salt pork and sausage fat. It's
the kind of dish that makes you wonder whether cooking as a practice has been in
decline since the invention of frying. Similarly, a piece of braised guinea fowl, its skin
