A terrific new article on the history of the @cpsa-acsp.bsky.social Women's Caucus has just been published. Thanks to @joannaeveritt.bsky.social and Samantha Papuha for this important documenting of CPSA history.

Exciting that the call is out for the 2026 annual CPSA conference, hosted by our friends at the University of Ottawa, June 2-4. As a reminder, this is a stand-alone conference after the cancellation of Congress 2026. Congrats to everyone for making this happen. mycpsa-cpsa-acsp.ca/cfp/cfp_index

When I was associate dean for research, I was keenly aware that pretty much everything I did took away rather than contributed to the operating budget. New money was only for new things. But it wasn’t clear if people understood this.

While I don’t have strong opinions on the House of Plantagenet, it pleases me that the Richard III Society of Canada ran this ad in today’s Globe and Mail, as they have every August 22 since 1966. @richardiiisocca.bsky.social

At a time when democratic institutions are under pressure around the world, the study of Canadian political institutions remains more important than ever, but in new and expanded ways, beyond the traditional "legion of improvers."

The field has been invigorated by approaches such as feminist institutionalism that unpack the institutions themselves and their assumptions and cultures. Particularly important are the cues that may seem obvious to people like me but are less visible to racialized and other equity-seeking groups.

While there was much good work, we also had many blind spots, particularly the extent to which most of us were white men studying the institutions of other white men, and how power could be redistributed, often to other white men. This led us into circular discussions with diminishing returns.

Jonathan Malloy @jonathanmalloy.bsky.social · 10/06/2025
My address, "Canadian Institutionalism: Political Science and the Study of Political Institutions in Canada," focused on the "legion of improvers," including myself, that long took a normative view of Canadian political institutions, often embedding ourselves within the state to study the state.

It was great to attend my 30th straight Canadian Political Science Association annual conference last week and deliver my presidential address. I was especially happy to be unconventionally introduced by @mcloutier.bsky.social with a quiz for the crowd on "how well do you know Malloy and the CPSA?"

This year is an experiment; the dinner remains popular but may not be sustainable in the future, since we run it on a cost-recovery basis. But if there is a push, we may even try dancing again.

Jonathan Malloy @jonathanmalloy.bsky.social · 01/06/2025
As for dancing...in my era, we've had dancing three times at the CPSA Presidential Dinner. On the boat in Toronto Harbour (2006); at the Concordia Club in Kitchener (2011), and in 2015 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. The general consensus from these is that the CPSA. Does. Not. Dance.

This year we're holding a ticketed reception instead. The costs of a traditional dinner for 150-300 people in downtown Toronto were daunting enough that we decided it was time to experiment. bsky.app/profile/jona...

The dinner has always been a highlight and the venue for our annual prizes. Venues include a boat in Toronto (2006); vineyard (2014, Brock); and the Calgary Zoo (2016). We've also hit the Hotel Empress (Victoria, 2013); Fort Garry Hotel (Winnipeg, 2004), and the Chateau Frontenac (Quebec, 2001).

This event is an important @cpsa-acsp.bsky.social milestone, replacing our traditional plated dinner with a ticketed reception (including one free drink!) While a onetime decision after deciding a dinner in downtown Toronto was too $$$, feedback from members will be important for future years.

It's an 18 minute walk from the main CPSA activities at George Brown College's St. James campus. There is both indoor and outdoor space; fingers crossed that the weather allows us to enjoy the latter. All event spaces in the building are fully accessible. (www.tmustudentcentre.ca/conference-s...)

People outside actual teaching who have big visions about “teaching” often seem to forget about assessment in general or figure it will all just work out.

@alexusherhesa.bsky.social points out the most basic reason why faculty have been slow to embrace AI…the impossibility of doing assessment on the mass scale that our teaching model is based on. Guiding and assessing 10 students is maybe possible. Not 100. higheredstrategy.com/the-cost-imp...
