The full lede is even better. There’s a clarity here that’s lacking in a lot of NYT coverage. Straight to the point in describing how not-normal this is, and how it’s the kind of stunt pulled by terrorists, not liberal governments.

NYT gets (and deserves) plenty of shit for their soft-ass news distortion headlines, but this description of this horrific announcement is pretty spot on, comparing Hegseth’s military to the world’s most repressive and violent regimes.

FWIW, basically everyone I follow on Letterboxd liked or loved DIGGER. It’s got an overall 3.8 on the platform - exactly the same as the much more positively-reviewed RESIDENT EVIL. Take that for what you will, but this isn’t being universally panned by those seeing it.

If ABBA had recorded this song in the 70s it would have topped the charts and later shown up in both Mamma Mia movies.

The headline sounds horrible and gross, but the actual details are much more technical and wonky - nothing particularly objectionable here. They're not promising to turn RE Engine into an AI slop machine.

Every new detail about this is so sickening. It seems like the DA just fully shrugged this off without giving it a second’s thought - and then lied to the world about it. Very glad Kathy Hochul took it out of his hands (and did very so publicly without mincing words).

I mean seriously, I'm getting big "Yoda quote wall" Theranos vibes from Sharma (this is a real detail from John Carreyrou's "Bad Blood," BTW - not just an invention of The Dropout).

The Asha Sharma profile in the NYT is definitely a corporate puff piece, but IMO it reads as *deeply* embarrassing for Sharma. Not only does she have nothing of substance to say, but she talks like Elizabeth Holmes did at Theranos, exclusively in proverbs and platitudes and 'hustle mindset' BS.

And if you disagree, I guess I'll just point you back to the article linked above, and what Dr. Manne writes about here, and then tell you to fuck all the way off because I can't believe this is still up for debate in the year 2026. Maddening.

I mostly let it slide when students misspell my name ("Johnathan" or "Johnathon"), even though they see it spelled correctly all the time, but I had someone turn in a paper about Jonathan Glazer using the same misspelling for both of us and thought 'fuck it, let's give them a brief etymology lesson:

And because of that, when we started work on this season, we really didn't know how we'd cover the Gundam material again. So we really evolved our format and style for these episodes, and it's led to some of my favorite conversations we've ever had. Here's the full schedule for all 13 episodes:

Japanimation Station returns tomorrow for the final 13 episodes of our TOMINO-THON! I couldn't be prouder of these episodes, and I'm so excited for everyone to start hearing them. It's a very full-circle season, given that Japanimation Station was born from Weekly Suit Gundam.

I'm glad someone's finally highlighting this. I too was surprised that Fire Emblem lets you hire prostitutes in the streets of Dagda and then kill them and take your money back. I guess even Nintendo's trying to chase GTA fever these days. Seemed a little out of bounds for Fire Emblem tho.

In no particular order, tho Twin Peaks would be 1, then Deadwood/Saul fighting for 2. Breaking Bad might also be here but Saul so dramatically dwarfs that accomplishment I'm fine leaving it off for other shows. Doctor Who is 100% cheating but they allow it, so fuck it. Capaldi years, baby.

They underscore that it wasn’t technically illegal for him to serve, but wouldn’t a domestic abuse charge and restraining order be, like, the *exact* kind of conflict you’d be screening for in this specific case? A pretty mind-blowing fuck up this guy was seated. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/15/u...

I hadn’t been following this super closely, but the revelation that the holdout on the Lindsay Clancy jury (who refused to follow the judge’s instructions) was a domestic abuser is so incredibly bleak. Jesus.

You can’t “de-grain animation to get to the look of the original cel.” That’s gibberish. DBZ is a clear example of this: look how much more natural and detailed the clouds look with the texture of the film augmenting the art, vs Funi’s heavily de-noised Blu-ray. No one wanted it to look like that.

Oh and they announced a new StarCraft for 2030? Ok. Sure. Go for it. Will Microsoft still be publishing games by then? No fucking idea. But yeah. StarCraft revival in 2030. Good luck.

If you're in a Looney Tunes mood after Coyote vs Acme, Warner Archive's latest Collector's Vault set is out today. 50 cartoons for <$30. 25 never-before-restored on disc, 25 new to Blu-ray. We're so damn lucky to be getting these, and the more they're supported the more there will be.

They do cite academic 'experts' who are pro-AI in limited capacities, but people need to realize the overwhelming pressure large organizations (like Universities) are exerting to make workers pretend AI is useful. Lots of writing on this, like Nikhil Suresh here: hermit-tech.com/blog/ai-mani...

You do not get the perspective of an actual student (THE SUBJECTS OF THE PIECE) until the final 4 paragraphs. All 3 quoted don't like the idea of using AI for writing. Feels like maybe you put that up top instead of several interviews with financially invested AI corporate shills?

Jonathan Lack @jonathanlack.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Here's the kicker: about halfway through they note that NYT is suing all these companies for copyright infringement, w/o explaining why they're doing that or why it might be bad for students to rely on tech that is currently facing theft and plagiarism lawsuits. The parenthetical just sits there.

Jonathan Lack @jonathanlack.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
It continues in this wishy-washy vein, presenting the obvious well-researched quantifiable harms of AI next to the (entirely hypothetical, unproven, unprovable) perspectives of people in the industry with a vested financial interest in hawking the product (the article does not point this out).

New NYT story on students writing with AI, and framing of it kind of drives me crazy. It begins by explaining how 'taxing' writing is, then presents the AI industry's perspective, then only in the 10th paragraph suggests writing is maybe good for you actually. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/17/u...

It took me weeks to hit Gold with Aki, less time but still a lot for Yasmine, and I just hit Gold with Ryu after 3 days. This is the match where I ranked up and I was nervous enough I almost whiffed it…but not quite! Haha! Victory!

Jonathan Lack @jonathanlack.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I’ve still been playing a ton of Street Fighter, but with both AKI and Yasmine, I reached Gold rank and kind of hit a wall where I was no longer making progress. So I decided I should refocus on fundamentals and play Ryu, and, uh, I’m *much* better with him, as you can see here.

This story makes it seem like introducing one’s successor to Pikachu is an integral part of the Apple CEO hand-off. Like Pikachu knows crucial trade secrets revealed only to Tim Cook, that he will now share with John Ternus, as the last step in the corporate transition.

I didn’t know much about the Imagination Library before today but oh my god, just one of the most staggering and beautiful acts of philanthropy anyone’s ever done. Getting books to nearly a million kids a month. Over 100 million books total. In absolute awe of this.

There was a whole academic study about this particular act of philanthropy, giving us a powerful data point about the efficacy of unconditional cash support. She got people back to “baseline financial stability” in just a few months. Amazing.
The impact of the fund's financial relief for the 2016 wildfire victims was studied by University of Tennessee College of Social Work professor Stacia West, who examined the impact of cash transfers on poverty alleviation.[213] West surveyed 100 recipients of the emergency relief funds in April 2017 on topics including housing, financial impact, physical and emotional health and sources of support, with a follow-up survey conducted in December 2017. West found that the "My People Fund", in tandem with traditional disaster response, gave families the ability to make decisions that were most beneficial to them and concluded that unconditional cash support may be more beneficial for disaster relief than conditional financial support.[214] The report cited the impact of the monthly financial disbursements from the "My People Fund" on residents' emergency savings: "Following the monthly disbursements of unconditional cash assistance, participants were able to return to baseline financial stability reported prior to the wildfire and improve their ability to set aside savings for hypothetical future emergencies."[215]

I also think the season's new logo is pretty damn spiffy, if I do say so myself. We pulled this image from a bonkers photoshoot Tomino did for Char's Counterattack with Newtype in 1988. That man and his umbrella are iconic.

Here's the full schedule for the season. Kicking off with a Zeta Gundam 2-parter, and continuing on through G-Reco as our grand finale! We've put more work into these episodes than ever, and we think you're going to love them. So excited to share the season this September.

Excited to announce that Japanimation Station Season 6 Part 2 is premiering on Sunday, September 27th, airing for 13 episodes through the end of the year. In the second half of our Tomino-Thon, we'll be following Tomino Yoshiyuki's career from the revival of Gundam in 1984 to the present day!

If you don’t live in Colorado, you might be blissfully unaware of how our airport is dozens of miles away from any and all population centers. It is genuinely insane. It feels like a punishment we all endure for living here. I don’t know how they’re legally allowed to call it the “Denver” airport.

Criterion's November line-up is maybe the most stacked I've ever seen from them. RIGHT STUFF is one of my all-time favorites, plus 4Ks of Wild at Heart, Shoot the Piano Player, Marie Antoinette, Harold and Maude, and K-Pop Demon Hunters. Hot damn.

Hayao Miyazaki should be part of the conversation here. His instincts for kinetic action are second to none, particularly in his late-70s/80s work. This bit from Lupin III is one of the best, most teachable examples of momentum within and across cuts you will ever see, in live-action or animation.

Wrote this the other day about I WANT YOUR SEX, and felt immediately vindicated for it when the ONE NIGHT ONLY reviews and interviews started rolling in. I don't think we've really begun reckoning with how brutally puritanical the media landscape is right now. letterboxd.com/dinochow/fil...

There is no better symbol of VICTORY GUNDAM's vibes than the scene in episode 39 where they bury their comrades, and the line of crosses is so long no frame can hold them all. In this tracking shot, it takes almost 6 seconds (139 frames) for Uso to walk past them and he doesn't even reach the end.

The central conceit is basically just Cinerama, but less technically complex/demanding and more modular. Cinerama was a single ultra-wide screen that wrapped around into your periphery, and used 3 projectors. I’ve been in a few real Cinerama theaters and they’re very cool.

We got our first “ScreenX” auditorium in Colorado for Spidey, so I went to check it out today. Kinda neat, but pretty low on the PLF gimmick tier list. The idea is it adds 2 screens on the left-right walls to extend the image around your periphery (tho only for parts of the movie).

For the record, this is my AI syllabus statement. And these are the slides with which I introduce that policy. The “conversation” is establishing that A) Academic integrity is important, B) we’re here to learn and develop skills, not offload cognition, and C) there will be sanctions for dishonesty.

Jonathan Lack @jonathanlack.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
Nope. Don’t want to turn my syllabus AI statements into “ongoing conversations.” It’s a policy, not a debate. And I sure as shit don’t want to listen to ‘academics’ who have sold out their credentials to shill AI. I get so many of these in my inbox these days. It’s brutally depressing.

I mean look at this run. What a line-up. Dude's already been in 2 awesome movies this year and he has 3 left to go. I hadn't even heard about 'Here Comes the Flood' - it's the new Fernando Meirelles movie and he's starring opposite Denzel Washington. Sign me the fuck up. This is the year of RPats.

“Trump gutted air traffic control so badly he died in a helicopter-on-jet crash” would be the funniest way for him to die were it not for the innocent passengers on the other jet. So I’m glad for those people that they narrowly avoided this. But only glad for them.

Played around with Yasmine in SF6 - she’s super fun! I haven’t necessarily clicked with rushdown characters before but I like her kit a lot. Her arcade mode has a good amount of story/characterization and some really great art, including this one going straight into my wallpaper rotation.
