ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini are all pretty good at physics and calculus, ymmv. However, they are all terrible at differential equations. Can any smart people weigh in as to why?

I had a differential equations problem today, and the only way I found to solve it was to create an excel spreadsheet and iterate for 16,000 rows, the whole time thinking about those NASA ladies doing that by hand for the space program, but also I HAVE OTHER THINGS TO DO PROFESSOR

Struggling today with applying calculus. Wouldn’t it be strange if I memorized a bunch of chess games but didn’t know how to use a bishop? Stranger still if I made As in Chess I & II! That’s how it feels. I know how to integrate but not why. Just venting.

Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)

This is all just my opinion, but I know a lot of smart students who are struggling, and I see educators blaming AI, social media, etc., afraid to look inward. I loved your thought-provoking piece, and I think you will figure out a good way forward. You sound like a great teacher.

So, three questions that educators are afraid to ask right now that are actually THE questions. 1) Is this material relevant to students and their fields? 2) What does homework accomplish for students and their fields? 3) How are educators and their methods out of touch with students’ needs?

“Sharpening your mind” is not an acceptable answer now. We have to acknowledge that the old gatekeeping model is part of the problem. Economic pressures are tremendous. Time stress is tremendous. No one is going to spend days on problems they feel are irrelevant if they don’t have to.

I actually want to be a physicist. If it’s a requisite course for them on their way to nursing school, why are they learning the nuances of copper’s electron configuration? The answer is somewhere in that question for every teacher, student, and institution right now.

I used ChatGPT a lot for Physics I because the instruction was pretty chaotic. The LLM was about as good as fellow students, which was perfect for studying. I made a 98 in the class and 105 on the in-person final.
