It's worse than that: because populism can't deliver its promises, it has to keep finding new traitors & enemies to blame. It has to keep tearing at the walls of its imagined prison. The more it fails, the more it turns people against each other. And the more it seeks to destroy anything in its way

A graphic entitled "so long, farewell". It reads: "Many of the 1608 respondents who answered the question below in a Nature survey said that the election of Donald Trump as president had affected their future plans."
It then shows the question: "Are you a US researcher who is considering leaving the country following disruptions to science prompted by the Trump administration?"
An orange bar shows 75.3% respondents said yes. A blue bar shows 24.7% respondents said no.

Yorkshire Water to pay £40m for sewage overflow failures
An agreement with the regulator forces the company to spend the bulk of the money on sewage spill prevention while a local river partnership also gets cash to enable improvement work.

In his farewell address, Joe Biden warned against what is “taking shape” in America: an oligarchy that threatens the country’s democracy. Read David Remnick on what we can take away from the outgoing President’s alarming remarks: nyer.cm/faHlB38
An excerpt from President Biden’s farewell address that reads, “I want to warn the country of some things that give me great concern. And this is a dangerous concern. And that’s the dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a very few ultra-wealthy people. Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead.”

As shocking as this is, it’s also likely that the regime won’t work either for Trump, nor Musk, who will each feel threatened by each other and try to fight it out between them. They will already know that. I’ve little idea where that may leave the world.
