Not my favorite Steinbeck book, but I'm partway through the Netflix adaptation and loving it. For the most part, very faithful to the book, and Florence Pugh is chillingly good as the sociopathic Cathy Ames. #tvsky #eastofeden #netflix youtu.be/M9NWvGZViCg?...

The Son of Man, 1964
Oil on Canvas
Private Collection

Magritte painted it as a self-portrait.

The painting is of Magritte in an overcoat and a bowler hat standing in front of a low wall, beyond which are the sea and a cloudy sky.

Magritte’s face is almost obscured by a green apple. However, his eyes can be seen peeking over the edge of the apple.

Margaret Hamilton, whose programming helped land astronauts safely on the moon, has died at the age of 90.
In 1965, Hamilton was hired as the first female programmer on the Apollo project at MIT, and was soon elevated to director of the Software Engineering division, designing the onboard computers used on Apollo flights.
On July 20, 1969, Hamilton's software was put to the test as Eagle, the Apollo 11 lunar module, began its descent towards the moon's surface. When alarms on board began to flash, flight controllers at Houston Mission Control raced to understand the problem — and decide whether to abort the landing.
They determined that the computers were overloaded and made a critical decision: instead of canceling the mission, they placed their trust in the onboard software written by Hamilton and her team. Ultimately, Hamilton's code saved the day, overriding all other functions in order to make landing the priority.
“If the computer hadn't recognized this problem and taken recovery action, I doubt if Apollo 11 would have been the successful Moon landing it was,” Hamilton would later write.
Six and a half hours after the Eagle made its fraught landing, Neil Armstrong, made his historic first step on the lunar surface. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” Armstrong would famously say as he descended from the Eagle’s ladder. Yet the moment was not made by men alone.Margaret Hamilton in 1969, standing next to the stack of navigation software that she and her MIT team produced for the Apollo Project.

Elon would make a great Bond villain
We always ask which dystopian novels best predicted the future, but it was in reality Ian Fleming who succinctly showed that the real dangers of the world are mega-rich businessmen whose money didn't make them happy, so they want to destroy the world.

In most of my stories, bad things happen to bad people. Though I've written five stories with the same main character, who often has to make choices and always chooses the right one (often reluctantly) www.metastellar.com/fiction/unde...

Going in. Didn't want the character to be a rapist.

Jon Adcock @jonadcock.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
From the start. I spent a lot of time researching folktales. The tale about stealing something belonging to a selkie or mermaid to make them your wife kept coming up. There's more than a little rape vibe to that. That's why he tried to give it back, and it turns out to be something that she wanted.

By trying. "Siren's Song" was initially written for an Apex monthly contest. That month's prompt was "folklore." I struggled to get it to 1000 words or fewer and couldn't. Belladonna's Garden accepted the longer, better version. www.belladonnasgardenlit.com/issues/winte...

No, three weeks is enough time to write 1000 words (even though I’m a slow writer). Though, there’s been a few times I’ve given up because I just couldn’t tell the story i wanted to tell in so few words. Those stories ended up getting published in the longer versions

Most of the flash have been written for the Apex Magazine monthly contest, which I have yet to win. If it works as a flash, I’ll then submit to AntipodeanSF and the editor there usually accepts it.

Jon Adcock @jonadcock.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I usually have to go back and cut the story down. All the flash fiction I've written has been for specific publications; if they don't accept it, I go back, expand the story, and submit the longer version elsewhere.

Jon Adcock @jonadcock.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The endings are easy. Most of the time, I've already written the sentence the story will end on. Getting there in 1000-1200 words is the hard part.

Jon Adcock @jonadcock.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The story is set in a bar located in the bayous of Louisiana where the clientele is a bit "unusual." It's flash fiction and, at least for me, that's difficult to write.
