From a father's friend. The hills above Crickhowell are still burning. Smoke in the house again last night. There appears to be five major fires in Wales now. The same as the whole of France.

These are not "dangerous tactics". They're de-legitimising journalism reliant on bollocks and tittle tattle, and routing out the culture that feeds it. It's exactly what they should be doing.

An odd story in which a landowner from Birmingham has purchased a defunct Welsh reservoir (now an influencer beauty spot) and started charging £2 entry in order to "deter public visitation to the site". They seem to think this has removed their liability. In fact, it significantly increases it.

This case is a striking example of the way particular lobby groups hold the centre of gravity in rural affairs. Natural England is supposed to be an independent advisory body to government whose concerns should be: 1) the science 2) the law 3) the protection & restoration of nature 1/3

The government is not in fact committed to making sure that everyone in the country has access to nature. It has committed to no such thing and should not claim it has. Nine river walks and three forests, which include no additional access, will not change that www.theguardian.com/environment/...

It's quite something to see politicians like Luke Akehurst (for whom politics is their job and entire life) and political journalists like Tim Shipman (for whom politics is their job and entire life) unable to do the most basic forms of political analysis, simply because it shatters their worldview.

Funny to see Farmers Guardian leading with this, since people like Clarkson were the precise reason the 'family farm tax' (aka removal of an inheritance tax exemption for large estates) was introduced in the first place.

I reported the source video to Facebook, which, as a reminder, non-consensually depicts a minor in order to fuel his mass vilification on the internet, leading to calls for this death and so on. Facebook: this is fine, actually. What's your problem?

This charming person is currently sharing far-right ragebait in order to make a spurious attack on the right to roam (one of her pet hates). @batconservation.bsky.social, @badgertrust.bsky.social, Woodland Trust... Are you sure you want to be associated with this person's 'day of action'?

Sold out screening of Our Land at Curzon Soho this week. With a feisty Q&A to boot. The distance between ourselves and Hugh Inge-Innes-Lillingston of the Thorpe Estate: a trifling acre or two. The distance to Francis Fulford of Great Fulford: an ocean, a continent, an intergalactic space voyage.

Thanks for all the positive comments about the article. www.inkcap.co.uk/the-welsh-are-reclaiming-rewilding Today I visited Tir Natur, the newest (& largest) Rewilding project in Wales. Early days, lots of rain. But easy to see what this valley could become, once nature is able to take the lead.

In my view: opponents of rewilding in Wales have got a big thing wrong and a big thing right. Wrong: rewilding is not the new clearances. It's a vital mechanism for rural repopulation. And one of our best hopes we have for maintaining and returning young people in rural areas. That's vital.
BBC Wales article headlined "Rural area 'haemorrhaging' young people'"

And to be equal opportunities: here's Plaid's Iorwerth also meeting Wales's favourite climate change denier. They are also pledging to end "farming by calendar", i.e. replace NVZ with a "science-led, outcomes based and risk proportionate" approach. Which sounds like a lot of words for deregulation.
130
Jon Moses @jon-moses.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
No great surprise that Reform are coming out with a policy to end all NVZ regulations in Wales; in other words to allow slurry dumping to continue poisoning rivers across the country. But curious politics. Their only hope is that there isn't a significant enough Welsh media to explain what it means

Plaid says it wants a "new deal for rural Wales". Great. But it doesn't actually have any policies to achieve one. Instead, all their policies relate solely to farming. Agriculture involves, at most, around 10% of the rural population in Wales. It is not a growth sector.

A couple of years ago I came across a farmer digging up this amazing habitat. He'd misunderstood a (poorly communicated) Welsh government proposal about tree planting, so was felling to create rows of generic trees, which would be far less ecologically valuable. Always have the conversation!

Some excellent announcements in the Welsh Greens Party manifesto today, including plans for a Welsh Right to Roam Act, a Land Reform Act and a National Rewilding Strategy. The Greens could well end up holding the balance of power in the forthcoming Senedd elections...

Absolutely peak Britain that the 'Poppy Factory veterans charity' is dropping Section 21 eviction notices on cancer patients to avoid obligations under the Renters' Rights Act. This country is so itself sometimes. Reporting via @financialtimes.com

A feature of the (poor quality) debate on Israel-Palestine in the UK is that most people have never visited either country, don't understand the political culture & have never witnessed settler fanaticism. That allows for a 'western liberal' projection which collapses the moment you leave Tel Aviv.

Fwiw fly-tipping is definitely a problem, exacerbated by poor regulation and the slashing of the Environment Agency budget etc Yet much of CUB's framing seems to be that councils just don't care. And "a failure of personal responsibility". Solutions apparently include "security cameras everywhere"

5/ Shooting, especially on grouse moors, is associated with the persistent illegal killing of raptors. See this case from just last week. Prosecution was only possible because of an RSPB investigation. Much more happens with impunity. raptorpersecutionuk.org/2026/03/18/c...

4/ Those mesopredators then predate other species, including the vulnerable nesting birds the shooting world argues it helps conserve. It's a misconception that most of these pheasants, even ones shot on the estate, will be eaten by people. Many end up dumped in pits, in streams, on road verges.

2/ Tim Bonner, its Chief Exec, talks up a billion pound industry employing thousands of people. So why does he think such an apparently major industry, which draws commercial benefit from an environmentally impactful practice, should not be licensed?

Jon Moses @jon-moses.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
Well, quite. This is the funny thing about the attempt to frame this as another "attack" or "hit" on farming / farmers. ...Who exactly do they think is making these voluntary decisions to sell, rent, or establish solar on farmland?

Jon Moses @jon-moses.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
Labour's LATEST ATTACK on our RURAL HERITAGE shows how little they UNDERSTAND THE COUNTRYSIDE. CRACKING DOWN on our 500-year-old rural practice. Yes, CRACKING DOWN on our 1,000-year-old rural practice. 🤔

Jon Moses @jon-moses.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
Aaaaaand there it is. "Tens of thousands of acres!" Which is... less than 1% of England. For comparison: we currently use 2.3% of arable land to grow crops for bioenegy. As we transition, this can be replaced by solar, which is wildly more efficient. Meaning overall *less* land used for energy.

Funny bit of trolling by the civil servant who put together this chart in the Land Use Framework. Solar energy - a fixation of the rural right - so negligible in percentage land use terms there's not enough space to put a number.

In fact, this seems to be the story across the country. The first place I ever saw a Nightjar in full flight was at Beacon Hill in the Wye Valley (also access land). Their recovery is due to another alliance between local people & the National Landscape team. My dad's mate helps manage the cattle!
140
Jon Moses @jon-moses.bsky.social · 17/03/2026
Access rights, no access rights: Nightjar can thrive regardless if the habitat is right. And that's what's most interesting. Because as far as I can tell much of this conservation effort was powered by volunteers, albeit under the direction of e-NGOs and the South Downs National Park Authorities.
Bullet points noting 115 volunteers dedicated 50,000 hours to looking after the heath.

(Those that aren't, like Woolmer Forest, are Ministry of Defence firing ranges - which, ironically, tend to be some of the best conservation sites in Britain - would obviously always have qualified access regardless. P.S - for those who've read their EP Thompson: shoutout to the Waltham Blacks)
Map depicting Woolmer Forest, demonstrating that it's a firing range.

But as @iancarter67.bsky.social has pointed out nearly all of the sites where the recovery has happened *are already on access land* where there currently *is* a right to roam in England. Most of our surviving heaths are commons which form part of the 8% of access land dedicated under the CRoW Act.
