I tend to freak out people who like musicals when I tell them about a primary school production of Jesus Christ Superstar my then 11 year old brother was in. A 12 year old girl singing I Don’t Know How To Love Him does the psychic damage. (Not the Gibb brothers, sorry, just age-appropriateness.)

Which is where Bailey’s healthiness falls down. The back teeth. They need a proper done-by-a-vet cleaning within 12 months. He’ll need sedation at the very least for that, & the vet suggested that the cyst in the middle of his forehead might be dealt with at the same time. Which would be good.

I explained that he had been off dry food altogether - he didn’t want to eat it by itself after Jasper left us - so the vet suggested mixing it with wet food for the variety. Also, because it’s good for his teeth.

Bailey had his vaccinations today, and the vet looked him over. He’s a healthy boy, for the most part. They were a little worried about his weight: from over 10 kilos to just over 7 kilos since February, which is a fair bit in a short time for a smallish dog.

Now that Ursula has pronounced on this, as one might say, it’s nice not to be wrong alone on the internet about a fictional character’s name. It’d be another matter for actual people known by that name, of course.

I’m not Ursula, but I keep reading it as Yorghee. I am now, most likely, officially wrong on the internet.

Both Bailey & myself seem to be waiting for big flydy to reappear. I checked the lampshade straight off, & flydy wasn’t there. That doesn’t mean that flydy isn’t in hiding somewhere else in the room. We will see.

Haven’t seen it, don’t need to see it, but understand why the fear. “Small, enclosed, underground spaces” is a phrase brought to us by the letters N, O, P, and E.

Seconded.

Oh dear, I spoke too soon. Big flydy was hiding in the bedside light, & Bailey saw it move. Cue attempts to chase it. Bailey is paying very close attention to the far corner of the room. And I have a cushion ready to swat at it.

J MacQueen @jomacmouse.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Oh good, the big flydy is not in my bedroom. It was in here last night, & Bailey wanted to chase it. I won’t have to do so much rolling over to the side & putting him back on the bed again when flydy wasn’t visible.

I’ve just looked them up, and they might have frightened the very young me as well. The adult me, not having had them as a formative experience, is comparing the possible budget for the costumes with those for some Doctor Who monsters in the 1960s & ‘70s.

Angusina? Poor girl. And Gordonina almost sounds Russian. My aunt prefers to be Robbie or Bobbie. But then she was the only girl amongst six children.

Donaldina sounds like it comes from a similar mindset to one my paternal grandfather had. He insisted his second child would be a boy named Robert. Then my aunt was born. No girls name having been picked, she became Roberta.

First day of daylight saving, & the light at 6.30 pm looked too early to eat. It’s now getting on for 7.30 pm & the light outside looks more like it, but clearly I need to get used to eating in the evening while the sun is still up.

Bailey could smell something delicious, & was refusing to take his Nexguard through sheer distraction. I gave up, & dropped it on top of his dinner. He ate around it and, when he was finished, took it very delicately over to the lounge to eat. At least he did eat it without needing encouragement.

Mum’s lunch time care visitors were discussing it, because of the detours they had to take. They were nearly followed into the house by a large blue tongue lizard. Not a good idea. Neither lizard nor Bailey should think about biting each other.

And they ended up having to take another way to the M1 because someone said to have been doing burnouts in wet conditions hit some of the people at the side of the road. There’s an ABC reporter in the park on Thomas Street. Closest place to the Link Road with coffee available from the servos nearby.

Bailey is barky this morning. The local NRL team has just left team headquarters to go down to Sydney for the Grand Final match tomorrow. People are encouraged to line the route out to the M1, and the road at the bottom of our street is part of the route. People are walking on his road!

Something called the Feudalism Bot liked a post about Newcastle’s NRL team. I think you need a better search facility, little bot. Just because they’re called the Knights doesn’t mean they’re really in your sphere of interest.

Also, I was a casual library assistant with the local hospital system’s medical libraries in 1997, & the library at the John Hunter dressed its skeleton near the main doors in Knights gear. Why not? It was Skelly Santa at Christmas. But food, well, not quite sure about that.

I shouldn’t be too surprised. My aunt in Brisbane was down here the last time, & she remembers the houses that were painted in the team colours. (She rang yesterday, partly to show support, & partly to remember Dad, who would’ve been 79 on Tuesday.)

ABC News Radio interviewed a fish & chip shop owner who is dyeing chips & potato scallops blue & red in support of the Newcastle Knights rugby league playing in a grand final 25 years after the previous occasion. He says he’s heard of a coffee shop somewhere around that is doing blue & red coffee.

It’s not North enough for some Sydney people who have, in the past, put the Lower Hunter Valley in the Central Coast. You’d know the difference, but some people think weird things like that.

Vet clinic has told us Bailey is overdue for his vaccinations. 15th of last month, they said, but Mum had several appointments around that time, making it hard to book. So, Wednesday of next week in the early afternoon it is. Pet Uber booked too.

Bathday for Bailey today. He’s home again, & I need to take a photo. I’d asked for the fur hanging down off his ears to be trimmed. It’d been hanging down into his dinner, & I had to finger-comb the stuck-together clumps. Now he looks like a puppy again, now that the ear fur is shorter.
Picture of an apricot coloured cavoodle sitting up on a two seater lounge coloured a shade of bluish-grey. His ears have been trimmed shorter than usual, & he’s fluffier than usual because he’s just come home from having a bath & a haircut.

We have had a few very warm spring days down in Australia, but we’re not at roasting every day season yet. So while the morning air is still a little crispy, it would be a good time to read Premee’s book. Or any of Premee’s books, really.

@katwhen.bsky.social mentions pillows & blankets, and I’m starting to think that’s a great idea. Bailey would love it too, given how he’s curled up on my lap right now.

Someone must’ve been counting on Newcastle not getting into the rugby league semi finals, let alone the Grand Final this weekend. They scheduled trackwork on Sunday, game day, between Newcastle Interchange and Wyong on the Central Coast. Now they’re cancelling the trackwork.

A small but welcome miracle: he was able to retrieve our order & bring it to us. I hope whoever originally got our order has theirs now & is equally happy.

J MacQueen @jomacmouse.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
So now he’s driving around, presumably going back over his route, & someone he gave our order to will give it back to him, we hope. We’ll see.

Good grief. We ran out of bread this morning, so I made an emergency order for bread & a couple of other things. Delivery driver hands over a couple of bags, but nothing in them formed any part of the order. So I asked about it, & he took them away.

Went with Mum to an appointment, & returned home to find out Bailey had been snacking on dirty undies. Mine, dammit. Good thing I ordered a few more last week. Trouble is, the pair he half devoured the crotch out of were relatively new. Give’m time to wear out naturally, doggie. That’s all I ask.
