John Wall Barger My Mother Is Having Trouble Saying the Word Abysses
it slins off her brain. her new brain that does not pause to carefullv explore words and ideas as it used to but skips and slides
and falls like a kid ice skating the first time, with that fearlessness, abs. a bushel, a business deal.
the word abyss from abyssus meaning bottomless pit. byssos is bottom as in a physical well with a floor, gristle, dismissal, tin whistle,
but with a we get mitbout bottom, an unquantifiable space, like the orange dusk right now in Vermont, or like
my mother's love for me, antiballistic missile. this hill. bristle. while her mind. slowly, becomes sayable, an object.
brain more than mind, the a drifting slowly slowly from byssos like an island
drifting from the mainland, an archipelago, slipping over meaning like rhymes of a poem, penny- whistle, flywheel, seagull,
learning to skate in reverse, the skater growing smaller, falling more, and the arena growing dark.,

I like how Zen overlaps with the language of poetry. Poetry isn't therapy, but can have a cathartic component, and a spiritual side. I wrote an essay about Zen and Chase Twichell and the director Antonioni, for Guernica. Grateful to the editors. www.guernicamag.com/the-gateless...
