This is going to be investigated one way or the other.

For the deranged who want to see the CRPC rules as they once were and now are (including the very specific definition of "lawyer" and the now-universal use of the word lawyer to refer to the person whose conduct is being regulated, check out: www.calbar.ca.gov/sites/defaul...

But it's entirely possible that she will be asked to explain on the record when she received the advice that this was OK. Because the bar complaint has been filed and she is out there saying it's perfectly fine to hold herself out - even today - as a lawyer.

It *is* true that the bar has gone after people for using "esq" and "attorney" too. But I am unaware of any California authority which says, oh, the word we use to govern the entirety of the conduct of the practice (lawyer) can also mean law school graduates. It's absurd.

In 2018, this was all simplified (and the numbering redone to conform to how the ABA does things) and the references to members and lawyers were simplified to just be "lawyers." No one would read the CRPC and not see that all references are to "lawyers"

Prior to 2018, this would have unambiguously been a problem. The California Rules of Professional Conduct defined Lawyer as a "member" of the California bar or someone admitted to any state's bar in good standing. (I'm simplifying.) And many of the rules governed "members" (of the bar).

herself while she was working in China is not the issue. I'm talking about periods of time when she had two feet in California and referring to oneself as a "lawyer" or even "general counsel."

The extent to which this can not possibly be accurate is difficult to explain. Especially if California is used as the reference (which is where Ms. Zacharia went to law school and apparently resided both prior to her moving to and following her return from, China). To be clear, what she called

specific question. I’d love to hear the researched answer someone gave her saying that JD=lawyer. Legal adviser? Fine. Expert? Fine. Consultant? Sure. But lawyer or attorney? No way. Anyone who actually gave that advice would be risking malpractice.

People should go take a look at the California Rules of Professional Conduct. From when she graduated to 2018, lawyer was a defined term (active member of the bar). Since then, every rule has been amended to apply to “lawyers” (used to be “members”). This response implies she was asking this

So.…didn’t tell the truth when asked at the Marine One gaggle. And hasn‘t in any public rep that she‘s an “attorney“ or “Outside counsel” - got it. And the consultant part Is….not a thing.

Well especially when you have tried to blackball the Article III ones in your district. Like you, I'd like to understand the basis here. (I understand that there are limited circumstances when state court judges can sign HSI warrant applications but the Times story facts seem to exclude that)

Still awaiting the answer here. It’s interesting because DOJ has an active complaint against two district judges and potentially more ”doe” judges already. So my guess is that it’s a magistrate? NYT discussed some back and forth yesterday but I don‘t believe they named the judge.

Yup - even if she held herself out as an in-house lawyer, in California those need to be registered (one can use a different state registration to get in hour status) or you need to be admitted here.

Not a security risk at all to have a Press Sec'y whom China could discredit at any time with a leak that only Chinese citizens can get PRC Bar Qualification. It's why I think this is going to be something we're all going to be told someone misheard or misspoke.

And in other news, the President's social media account posted a video which is absurdly beneath the dignity of his office.

And for clarity - the crack about the security clearance is this - although she worked for the acting DNI so I’m assuming he can just push one through quickly - the idea that the Chinese government might be able to leak that if she was saying she had a PRC Bar Qualification, such a statement would

All just a long way of saying - I have a feeling there is the potential of getting to “I graduated from law school, I did not ever say I was a licensed attorney…” and ”I didn’t hear the questions clearly when going on Marine One” with the potential that she passed the bar in some state but

little up. Others have posted about this - Chinese law licenses are (I think) restricted to Chinese citizens. Check out (as an example) Covington & Burling’s site - they have a Beijing office - very few of the team members have PRC Bar qualification (while others are admitted in US jurisdictions)

The answer before going onto Marine One did not help. The reference to China makes me wonder if she has yet obtained a security clearance. She’s the press secretary - she’s going to continue to be asked about this. But if the answer is she had a Chinese license to practice? That clears

My guess is that the rush to check whether the new press secretary has any record of admission in California has crashed the bar’s website. My bet is that it’s a short tenure. People are going to ask detailed questions about her tenure as an attorney until there are answers.

Asking the sitting Vice President how he’d define socialism is the biggest waste of time I could possibly imagine. I mean baseline assumption is that the VP is a useless office but I’d try to ask him something even vaguely connected with government policy. Like - do you have any plan to

Sure but actually connecting all of the dots is never really the point. It’s basically just connecting two tacks with the red string and letting crazier folks fill in the rest. All one big cabal to get Trump. Note that he wasn’t there in 2021. So he wasn’t one of the dudes who rationalized a

What is slightly wacky about this is the removal here. The looking at this in the abstract. As if there aren't really obvious policy choices and solutions. (See, tariffs, war in Iran, cutting of FDA in ways impacting food supply and food safety, etc etc etc). Trump as a person is the same

of his wedding in the first place? He has cash flow problems? His father is a billionaire almost 10 times over. His own personal fortune must total hundreds of millions of dollars. Like, I doubt the truth of “he paid him back” until receipts but I’m sorta like, why would you pay back a gift?

Someone help me out. So the President’s son has his wedding either entirely or partially funded by a Russian oligarch. Like over 100k. So the President says yesterday, well, I hear Don Jr. has paid him back. To which I ask - WHY? Why would Don Jr. need a Russian oligarch to front the cost

But the idea that his hostile takeover of the institution is a voter issue? Seems mildly myopic. It’s bad. But a lot is bad right now, it’s probably like 250 on my list.

Maybe my political instincts are hopelessly stuck in the 80s but it’s hard to see voters giving a damn about the Kennedy Center closing. I truly don’t get why he wants his name on it. I doubt it will be on it after 2028 even if it remains on there before then. I feel for people who work there.

Agree. Why I said as much in my opening reply. But the post you QT WAS arguing that Andy Young was a driver of Carter’s loss. I think Carter‘s loss falls squarely on his shoulders. Say what you want about his policy choices but he was the opposite of the current POTUS in terms of engagement.

johnsnotes.bsky.social @johnsnotes.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
I was alive. Andy Young was not a great UN Ambassador and was outshone by both a predecessor (Moynihan) and successor (Kirkpatrick) but I’ve never seen anyone claim that he was as involved in the crafting of Iran policy or USSR policy as you would have in, say, Kirkpatrick’s case.

johnsnotes.bsky.social @johnsnotes.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Very true. But of all of the things, the idea that Andy Young actually spoke for the Admin and their views on Iran is…not accurate (Not that you’re endorsing the actual post). Lots of admin histories have been written about Carter’s frustration with Iran.

And it's pretty clear that it's the Lutnicks of this Admin who are competing for attention and affection of POTUS. They're the problem as much as POTUS. The reason the first Admin didn't go nearly this off the rails until the end is because of fewer Lutnicks.

It's sort of amazing that this guy might force one of the biggest realignments in economics and geopolitics since NATO. Canada may end up considering entering a trade alliance with the EU, or some of the EU adjacent nations (UK, Norway, et. al) - something which would have been unthinkable in 2020.
