No mention of Brexit or Rejoin in this piece on Tory problems. I's a problem with no answer - Badenoch is absolutely wedged between Labour (Rejoin) and Reform (true Brexit hasn't been tried). That's why this huge shift from Burnham went without any real response #ukpol www.nytimes.com/2026...

Yes, he was popular with the public but not his peers. Gillard the opposite.

Labour - Brexit was a bad idea, and we are going to rejoin in time. Farage - Brexit a great idea but betrayed by government. That leaves Tories with the unappealing claim that if you squint hard enough, actualy existing Brexit looks good. Greens need to push Labour to move faster.

Now that #Rejoin is back on the #ukpol agenda, it will swallow everything else. Talk about industrial policy etc makes no sense until the direction of travel is decided. My distant analysis: good for Labour and Farage, who have clearly opposed positions.

"Kids these days!" Boomers were hippies, X-ers were slackers, Millennials were entitled, and now we get the same about Gen Z. Actual truth, lots of bosses are and always have been not bad at their jobs, and particularly bad at dealing with young workers.

I don't buy this as a general proposition. Losing a political fight doesn't oblige you to be gracious, or to accept the outcome as final. In Rudd's case, he was dumped in favour of Gillard, and returned the favour. And he's had a significant career since then, not that of a bitter ghost.

I don't agree with Greens on Ukraine, but in the end aid is fungible. If we give them butter, they can use the money they save to buy guns.

as another commenter points out, cosplay is more specifically visual than LARP, so there is still a distinction

Looking at #ukpol from afar, I’m struck by the completeness of Starmer’s disappearance. I’ve seen no assessments of his record, favorable or not. He appears more as a zero starting point, against which Burnham can be rated. A year ago, he had a massive majority and an iron grip on the Labour Party

John Quiggin @johnquiggin.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
LARP is a bit newer but as you and I show familiar to old folks who are moderately online. Not like skibbidi dibbidy or whatever
120
John Quiggin @johnquiggin.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Both. Pollies wearing hard hats a classic example of cosplay. And LARP typically refers to performative radicalism

John Quiggin @johnquiggin.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
NYTImes claiming LARP (meaning fakery rather than actual gameplay) is the new hit word for the young folk. I thought it was already in the dictionary, though I would more commonly use “cosplay” for the same thing.

And a lot of the movement is within the right and left pairs, with the result that Labor-LNP “two party-preferred” estimates sit very close to 50-50 most of the time. More on this later, I hope #auspol

An obvious fact, but not often spelt out. The Australian electorate is now split four ways, with (from right to left), One Nation, LNP, Labor and Independents + Greens all getting between 20 and 30 per cent in most polls.

To which swathes do you refer ? They haven’t even taken the rest of Donetsk which they mostly occupied in 2014. Not a single major city just some towns reduced to rubble.

John Quiggin @johnquiggin.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Not for the million or more Russians who've been casualties in the pursuit of Putin's delusional ambitions? Even with Trump and Xi on his side, he hasn't gained any ground in years. Why are you backing these evil men?
210
John Quiggin @johnquiggin.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
This is Trump-Putin nonsense. Johnson and Biden are long gone, and the idea that they were decisive is silly. The Ukrainians have offered ceasefire after ceasefire.
100
John Quiggin @johnquiggin.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Putin started the war and can stop it any time he wants, with a ceasefire on the current line of contact. The Europeans didn't ask for this war - they were keen to trade with Russia even after the annexation of Crimea. And, from Bucha onwards the Ukrainians know they must fight to the last.

Larissa Waters tried accommodation and was rewarded with the bastardry of the “offset for koalas” deal. It’s time to admit that Labor, LNP and One Nation are all on the same side, and that we need a pro-planet, pro-humanity, anti-Trump alternative.
1305
John Quiggin @johnquiggin.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I’ve always favoured the idea of an informal Labor-Greens coalition. But at least with Albanese in charge, that’s not going to happen. He’d much rather deal with the LNP (or, if push comes to shove, One Nation). Adam Bandt tried bargaining hard, and was successfully demonised.

Russia occupies Oleshky. Around 2,000 civilians remain and run out of food, medicine, water and electricity. Russia, as the occupying power, is responsible for facilitating humanitarian relief. Ukraine found another way in: its forces delivered ~4 tons of food by drone to 100 locations across town.
