Midgley Moor sits in the triangle between Hebden Bridge, Halifax and Oxenhope, in #WestYorkshire, rising to its highest point at White Hill. It is heather moorland with a number of standing stones, cairns and other interesting rock formations. Route at www.happyhiker.co.uk/MyWalks/West...

A benefit of growing roses is that there are usually some to pick and bring into the house. Even if it is raining outside. The scent is fabulous. #roseWednesday #gardening #roses

Sprays of pink are continuing the rose season into autumn in the garden. The polyantha rose, ‘The Fairy’ is tough and bright, apt for a rainy autumn day. Hope you have a good one. #roseWednesday #gardening 🌱

That’s an interesting one for #thicktrunkTuesday. Probably wouldn’t want to come across this in the dark. Bet there’s quite a lot of insect habitat in it though.

A good day to all. Rosa ‘Gabriel Oak’ is looking really good at the moment, bordered by the odd cream-pink bloom of rosa ‘Emily Brontë’ and behind rosa ‘Strawberry Hill’ standing tall. All by David Austin roses. #gardening 🌱

Spent the day as a volunteer in a vineyard picking the grapes. Very hard work, but the sugar content is high after the long hot summer and they are predicting a good, and possibly vintage, year for English wines. #winery #vineyards #Englishwine

Red is a strong colour in the garden so can clash. By chance I think I’ve found that dark green is a good backdrop for them. This is rose ‘Frilly Cuff’ in front of a Euonymous japonica (Jean Hughes) hedge. #GardensHour #gardening 🌱

Most early autumns see the roses still producing flowers but smaller and fewer in number. Not this year though, in my garden they are still going very strong. This is Gabriel Oak by David Austin, enjoying a rare bit of rain water. #gardening #roses 🌱

Fab beechwood yesterday. Non locals are surprised we have so much woodland in Norfolk. We’ll soon be kicking through heaps of fallen leaves. Little sign of good fungi yet, probably because it’s still too dry in these parts. #woodland #Norfolk

Curious as to how blackberries became classed as ‘fruits of the forest’ since they grow best in sun, hence being prolific in hedgerows. So many out now along my dog walk routes.

Something to brighten up your day on this #roseWednesday. I took this pic of Cream Babylon Eyes last week just after I planted it. It’s rose number 100 in the garden and she is a beauty. As a Persica type it also comes with an element of drought resistance. #roses #gardening 🌱

Keep feeding your roses. It’s prime time for roses to develop black spot or mildew, particularly older varieties that are less disease resistant. Use liquid tomato feed, and a top up with rose fertiliser will see them through the rest of the season. #roses #gardening 🌱

Anyone else grow Salvia Perovskia? Very drought tolerant and it flowers quite late so I really like it. It looks great drifting in a gentle breeze and is a lovely backdrop to many other colours, as with Kniphofia here. This variety is ‘Little Spire’. #GardensHour 🌱
