An old sketch, attempting to "get" some pixel art techniques at the time.

On this technique I put so much work into trying to figure out stability over camera motion, I forget to consider the still screens. I mean it's valid to focus on that (no-one will want to play a game that looks like a bag of worms), but it can be nice to consider shots here and there.

Oh yeah, I would like to give it a lower frame rate, but 2 problems. One is what is good for the background on "do nothing frames" and how to best handle dis-occlusion e.g. in the right, when you see stuff that hasn't been updated. Right now I just draw over the original colour (left).

Here's the April update to the technique. The main new addition is the use of a procedural flow map to inform brush stroke length and direction.

No-one asked for this
This shows an Unreal editor scene viewport with a typical "editor camera" object floating. Except the camera itself is getting affected by the stylized rendering technique. Hence, "no-one asked for this". You know, it sorta ruins the joke to say it, but then maybe it gets funny again in a wrap around sense? Post ironic? Maybe?

It's been a while since I did shader or graphics work. So long long that I've been learning how to use compute shaders, perform dispatches, and hook into the Unreal Render Dependency Graph. It is a lot of fun!

Here's a rendering technique I've been toying with over the last couple of months in Unreal. It will be used in the upcoming game "Valley of the Lost Abbey" by @rucach.bsky.social The effect is calculated at runtime with the goal of making any scene look more painterly. #UE5 #GameDev #UnrealEngine
A landscape with grass, brushes, trees and sky. There is a modification to the visuals that helps make the image look more painterly. This second image is also stylized like the first. But it's darker, from within an alcove peering out at the green and lush outside.

It’s hard to describe how tall these are. Located in Donegal Ireland, these are Europe’s tallest sea cliffs. Lucky to see them recently. Similar to how difficult it was to photograph the Colca canyon in Peru.

Was a queue for this one too. Got very busy quickly - was surprised it only opened at 7.30
Inside of an Irish pub. Saw dust on the floor, lots of decorations - generally “cottage core pub”.
