Hey, but at least the players and coaches and umpires are still real humans…. aren’t they?

Will he still be on the MLBPA negotiating team as a player rep, since he’s not on a MLB contract anymore?

Shoulda stayed in Seattle. (and the Braves never shoulda left M’waukee)

I agree, it’s fine! It’s safe and easily possible to co-exist on the sidewalk, especially if bikes move at the same pace as pedestrians.

As a dog walker, I find cyclists riding fast on the sidewalk to be scary (especially without communicating, and double especially when coming from behind) If the cyclist is moving the speed of walking, it’s not annoying at all!

The centerfield fence could drop straight down from the old scoreboard, and be 45 feet high. But… this rule would more likely lead to a new “dead ball era,” because owners are rich and powerful men who would rather manipulate outcomes than spend any of their wealth on something that benefits others

Owners have a lot of money, they can figure out how to make it work logistically

I’d love this. One of my “commissioner for a day” rule change suggestions has always been that every ballpark’s fence needs to have a spot be at least as far from homeplate as last year’s longest home run. So in 2027 every fence would need to extend to 474 ft.

johno_5 @johno5.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Yeah, that would be more exciting. Probably the only way to make that happen would be to make a rule that balls hit over the outfield wall are an out.

Gotta figure out how to remind everyone that the thing that makes sports enjoyable to watch are natural human characteristics like variation, individuality, impulse, creativity. imperfection, failure, and surprising inexplainable actions and outcomes.

MLB wants teams’ bullpens to get enough rest so all are available for the next bullpen game. and/or MLB marketing dept. wants fans to become complacent on the off-days, so they’ll switch over to watch football, hockey, WNBA playoffs, etc, and forget all about how boring MLB playoff games are.

This guy seems like he’s playing a comedic parody, based on a coach he saw in a 1960s or 70s comic strip like Tank McNamara.

They’re covering him exactly as a home-team newspaper would cover the final season of a great athlete who is still playing but declined rapidly, and has been the paper’s lead story every day for over 10 years. It’s reverence with a sprinkling of nostalgia, and an occasional brief mention of decline

In these situations, I just tell people I left my phone at home. This creates immediate shock, total confusion, and a lot of chaos.

This is my favorite bit of “analytical data” for the entire 2026 MLB season. It’s awesome: clear, accurate, indisputable in its statistical significance.

I have no idea. I’m not an expert in statistical sampling or variability. The historical overall winning % for the home playoff team is approximately 54%, so there should be some advantage to having 3 home games.

johno_5 @johno5.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
That’s true. Fans who had expectations for the team to win the division could be disappointed that they didn’t, and could think the team failed to meet their expectations.

A 3-game series at home is better for players (they don’t have to travel & can sleep at home), better for the city & neighborhood, better for home field staff & vendors, better because the home team gets to bat one more time, and much MUCH better for the fans! But it hasn’t been better for winning %

This year was not a failure, Cubs won 89 games & made playoffs. In terms of win-loss possibility, there is no historical advantage to playing at home in 3-game WC series. But yes, winning the division to get a bye creates more opportunity for winning a playoff series. Win the division, Cubs! 😊

If they don’t, we will very likely have Secretary of State Kushner and/or President Kushner within the next 15 years.

Republicans attack him because of his appearance and his first name (and perhaps some of his language, but mostly his appearance and name)

2026 was a good year: 89 wins and a playoff appearance, despite major injuries to more than half the pitching staff, and a month-long injury to starting shortstop. The team faltered in September, maybe they ran out of gas because many players (Hoerner, PCA, Busch) played almost every game?

With MLB and WNBA playoffs in full chaotic swing, it’s a great time to remind people that every playoff team, except one, will lose its last game and its last series of the year. Losing is inevitable for nearly all playoff teams.

This “blame the manager & coaches” thing is ridiculous. The team won 89 games! Cubs have the best offense in MLB. Four of the best starting pitchers and a couple good relievers missed significant % of the season. And the pitchers who did pitch, pitched poorly, giving up the most HRs in MLB.

Only 12 pitchers on the roster, so one less pitcher than regular season. But some starters (Imanaga, Holmes, Gausman?) likely will be used out of bullpen, adding more flexibility.
