I haven’t been on Instagram for months, hadn’t even thought about it. Logged in today and holy hell is it noisy, busy, obnoxious and overstimulating. I’m not sure if it’s my spicy brain, but I feel much calmer not using it. I’ll stick to the fediverse thanks.

Turned it into a 75% roas when we only set the target roas at 400% so below our previous 12 weeks average. At first it was spending way too much on clicks. £5 for a single click to get a £7 conversion. Even now using a portfolio strategy and bid cap, it’s just not performing anymore.

Thanks, we do have consent mode v2 and around 85% opt in rate, but modelling needs a lot of clicks and a lot of conversions which a small family business like ours simply can’t support. I’ve tried target roas again for the last 2 weeks and so far it’s taken a 480% tracked roas on manual cpc and

My car is a zen zone. I don’t use Bluetooth, it doesn’t have CarPlay. I have a USB stick loaded with my ripped FLAC files, so the car stereo has an indexed library of local music. I also use the built-in TomTom fully offline. Local maps. No distractions. I think this was peak driving before CarPlay

This is the setup we already had. Even with enhanced conversions, which we’ve had for a long time, it’s still harder and harder to measure everything accurately.

Google money grab, I’ve been running a manual cpc shopping campaign without any need to track. Before removing the tracking I’m testing to see if it outperforms. So far CPC down 90%. Conversions up 700%. Roas up from 500% to 1200%. I know my business way better than their algo and it shows. 2/2

I’ve always been uneasy using analytics to track sales. We have a small family business website that sells hand-made button badges. It became almost a requirement to connect analytics to Google Shopping Ads as they moved to algorithmic bidding. Well since the chaos of August and the obvious 1/2

Denver, Colorado! Next week, Saturday September the 26th, I will be at Arise, a fundraiser & event to benefit Urban Peak, a fantastic organization in Denver that works to help youths age 12 to 24 get off the streets & exit homelessness. I’ll be giving a talk and doing some story telling-

My wife’s 2011 MacBook lives again. At first we suspected a faulty ssd controller. Turns out it was the SATA cable yet again. This is the third one it’s had. She has had this laptop since new and loves it. So far, 2 new keyboards and back lights, 3 batteries, new speakers, 1 hdd and 2 SSD. It’s love

I realise that with the exception of music (which uses my own local library and music collection) and photos, I really don’t need anything else that is Mac OS specific. Maybe time to install Linux/bad on my 2019 iMac and be free of the upgrade cycle. This machine is more than enough for me.

I’m just glad the date & city haven’t changed. When I got the email last night I thought it had been cancelled. We only booked our flights and hotel last week, so I’m relieved and excited to see the new location. Also, it feels like a 90s rave here in the UK, with the venue staying secret :)

This essay hit me square between the eyes. I’ve been feeling this sense of needing to simplify my life for so long. I already switched back to my Casio so it felt extra directed at me. Even technically I’m moving back to the KISS methodology in everything. www.terrygodier.com/... #simplicity

This was important for me to solve from a privacy standpoint. I also prefer my users to not my sites and not a third party. Our server logs rotate out after 30 days and are never retained. As a side effect, our rankings have improved massively since disabling and user numbers/conversions quadrupled.

Ok. I’ve removed cloudflare from my sites. Something felt off about putting both a third party company & a black box between my site and users. Litespeed is actually doing a fine job, and with modsecurity and a few well designed .htaccess rules, it’s actually under lighter load.

Ok. I’m actually off all socials with the exception of mastodon. All apps removed. Only Openvibe for mastodon and a few bluesky users. I just can’t anymore. It’s all such a waste of time and I’m exhausted with the sales pitch’s and constant influencer nonsense. Fediverse is the last hope.

I can’t help but feel a bit wasteful. Had a smart meter fitted years ago, and was on agile octopus tariff for years. Lately, my readings stopped updating and apparently it’s an issue between these old meters and the phone mast. Specifically the 2G/3G switch off. New meter needed.

Even though I was ill, I was back home in Manchester over the weekend to watch AFI tear it up. Been listening since I was a kid and first saw them 25 years ago in the same city. Did not disappoint.

There is so much AI boosterism and bro culture going on right now - but holy shit. If you are knowledgable about something and you ask for its help, it’s makes up some amount of crap. Fine for code help, mostly untrustworthy for anything else.

The ai crawlers, scrapers and botnets are just out of control. I could manage this at the origin, but it still has to do work to block or drop connections, and at that rate it’s untenable. By comparison we had 8k requests from our UK target audience in that 24 hours. It’s mad.

Why I must use cloudflare now? I have a simple rule that fires if outside my target countries, or if the URL is a database query hog such as search and add to cart which can’t be cached. Last 24 hours, cloudflare challenged 724k from ips all over the globe using Chrome/145 UA….

I’ve been a huge advocate of self hosting, but of late my job has been stopping aggressive bots and crawlers and absolutely insane amounts of attacks. Modsecurity and immunify360 did ok but the server was constantly hammered. I’ve had websites for 30+ years. This era is insanity.

I’m done trying to chase spammers, scrapers, ai crawlers and bad bots. I’ve added cloudflare back onto my site, using tiered cache. Those in the UK & verified bots have free access. This is 99% of our audience. Rest of world it’s a managed challenge that will auto pass for most

Just a quick heads up, I might still post on social media over the summer (I use Fedica to post/schedule), but I’m physically taking the time away from socials for the rest of summer. I won’t be replying or scrolling. All apps removed. Contact me directly if you need me.

Absolute #retrogaming score! This seems to have been pulled from the Microsoft store, so I nabbed a physical copy for £12. Another reason digital and licensing sucks. I went to play the digital version and it’s gone. The license for my physical copy can’t be revoked.

Weirdest thing of the algorithm era is people trying to grow on these platforms and every post is like do you remember when…..? Do you like……? Who do you…..? - everyone asking pointless questions constantly to farm engagement. It’s so strange. Be a human.

I installed the latest version of instagram on my phone after months not using it. I saw Moseri say we can now tune our algorithm. What a dumpster fire. I’m in my early 40s, married but not a parent. It shows me OF girls, get rich quick, strong porn and retro gaming. Disastrous.

So I ended up removing cloudflare. The purist in me hates over complicating a website or server, and I also don’t like ceding control to a third party. It’s just another point of failure. Surprisingly, our site is faster and less stressed without CF. 264ms for a full dynamic page

I can’t beleive that Ministry - Last Tangle In Paris was recorded in 2012. Still one of my favourite live albums from the genre defining and often genre defying Ministry. The soundtrack to my Saturday. Uncle Al and his genius audio samples. #metal #industrial

Social media, in all its forms, feels like such a chore nowadays. Everyone on different platforms, all fenced off and seperate. After almost 20 years at the coal face of social media, I think I’ve reached my limit. It’s just not fun or compelling anymore. Crossposted with @openvibe.social

It’s been fun using @openvibe.social but I’m afraid I’m out now. I was thinking about upgrading to pro after using the app for a while. This morning, I open the app and it crashed. When I reopened I had to log in again and now the half price pro options are gone. £40 a year is just way too much.
